hazmat fees
« on: September 24, 2009, 02:42:55 PM »
Fuck 'em.

I don't see how 100g of something is no hazmat and 500g of it IS hazmat.

If something isn't hazmat to begin with, given the small range, then I don't think they should squeeze the extra cash out of your wallet.

Pisses me off and I contacted my supplier because this sounds ridiculous. Does this sounds accurate or am I just mistaken somewhere?

Order 5 quantities of 100 grams of the stuff ;D
Just kidding, but it might be a way to get out of it - though the normal shipping could amount to more...

Yeah, you'd think that but NOOOO fuckin bullshit I say. I get fucked in the butt either way. I'm gonna have to bite the bullet on this one. If I'm gonna get slammed I might as well get hazmat fees only once.

Oh well...I just needed a thread to bitch.  ;D

Hazmat fees are getting out of hand in this current age...they're only going to get worse I foresee. Let this be a warning for those who don't know...and a few of my suppliers do this too...BEWARE the hazmat. I didn't have a problem up until now but it's usually hidden in the fine print when you buy in bulk so be sure to ask so you don't get fucked in the end.

If something is hazmat in larger quantities but not smaller quantities, it will be shipped as ORD-M.  ORD-M just basically explains that in quantities less than X, this material will not do significant damage, if the worst were to happen.  Small amounts of flammables, and small amounts of organic acids may be shipped this way.  The small amounts are still considered hazardous materials, they're just not significant enough to present an immediate danger to the transportation (and it's people and facilities) and anyone using road way the material will be on haha.

I have a belief that the company decides what falls under ORD-M vs. Hazmat by the Paper Towell Roll method.  If the entire container spills and can be cleaned up safely with less than one roll of paper towels, it is considered ORD-M bahahaha.  Bounty, not generic.

Just got done doing some research and contacted my other supplier...he said he'll ship the same amount for amount $50 less and shipped as ORM-D...I guess you were right Doucher about the individual company deciding what's hazmat to some degree and what's not...on a side note, the cheaper guy is a smaller outfit than the more expensive bastard who is a bigger corp.

Not uncommon; business taxes and employee count have a huge play in prices.  That, and the larger company is more likely to be scrutinized for poor shipping.
