Acetaldehyde
« on: October 06, 2009, 03:35:22 AM »
The ingredient in widely used OTC slug and snail repellant 'Metaldehyde'. Undergoes rapid acid hydrolysis to acetaldehyde.

the brand above contains 1.5% metaldehyde and >60% inerts/wheat filler. It is also available as META fuel tablets;

I am not sure of the purity of the metaldehyde in the above fuel tablets, but it could be either separated, or hydrolysed then distilled. It sublimates at 110-120*C, and could be obtained from any of the products above by resublimation.

"Metaldehyde was converted to acetaldehyde by heating to 150*C for 4-5 hours, or by the reaction of concentrated hydrochloric acid (6M) for a couple of minutes."

from the book; Groundwater chemicals desk reference by John H Montgomery.

Problem is with the snail bait is that it makes the acetaldehyde very expensive doesn't it?

I wish I could find those fuel tablets!

Alanine is dear too (not as much as snail bait /g of end product), but if interested, the Strecker product of alanine is none other than acetaldehyde

With a little work, acetaldehyde can be produced from acetylene.

The bait in the picture above is top of the line and sells for $6 a kilogram and is 1.5% metaldehyde. There are cheaper snail baits around here for about $5 a kilogram but contain 4% metaldehyde. So about 40 grams metaldehyde for $5, I think it is not that bad the hassle to extract the poisonous shit would be greater. But if an agricultural source (up to 50%) could be acquired! Also it seems the Meta fuel tablets are not on the market any more, but Strecker degradation of Alanine is worth looking into. As D or L could be used, if you could find a cheap source it would be a very good source!

catalytic dehydrogention of ethanol? device should be once constructed and then you can produce gallons of aldehyde  (btw, Naf1, check the formula  ;) )
