In search of a safe miotic (pupil-constricting) drug...
« on: October 07, 2009, 04:28:33 AM »
I am trying to find a drug that can be safely used as a miotic to counteract pupil dilation as its primary effects... all miotic drugs I have been able to find are miotics as a side-effect and have undesirable/contraindictive primary effects, e.g. thorazine, opiates et al :-\

Does anyone know of any drug that could be used to safely counteract pupil dilation without any other significant effects? There are things that are used in opthalmology to cause mydriasis with no other effects, I'm hoping maybe there is a corresponding pupil-constricting/miotic substance... any ideas?

Thanks!

How is it opiates do it?
I wonder if loperamide drops would work?  :P
... likely that it doesn't work or that it isn't safe as I just made it up...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miosis#Drugs I'm sure you've seen this...

How about a weak muscarinic acetylcholine agonist, since the antagonist (atropine) causes dilation. Maybe nicotine?

loperamide is strickly a peripheral opiate it has poor solubility characteristics that keep it  in the gi tract as well as it's affinities for p-glycoproteins it's derivates you know it's esters now they make interesting drugs with central action but after a few tries nothing what gives swij knows this was'nt placebo because he tried the derivatives on others too they said it was very much like demerol.
