Where are all the yields?
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:30:24 AM »
Hello everyone, this is my first post, but not to complain...More like inspire or get insight.

Where are all your amazing yields? I've been lurking on the forums and I've seen a mass amount of posts on amps and MDA like chemicals, but I've yet to see a post on the yields of such reactions.

NOW: I am new, so I could be missing something, and if I am...please link me so I can see such yields, I am greatly interested.

I've seen synths on meth for all different chemicals, but the majority don't seem to post their theoretical and actual yields. I think this would help the community grow, and find better techniques, wouldn't you all agree?

I'll be posting some experimental procedures(For me atleast) soon...and I'll have some yields sometime soon. Hopefully  ;D

I agree. It must be understood that much discussion should take place before a reaction is performed but that still does not excuss the need for a total completion of threeds giving yeilds and side products if able to bring discussed synthesis full circle. Since I do not make drugs it would be hard for me to post yeilds but on synthesis I do perform I try to make sure to be as complete as possible stating my yeilds and where improvements could be added.

Sadly I do not find the time I would like to have to perform synthesis :-[

I would be greatly welcomed though if you have a higher ideal for the way that synthesis should be written out to perform some in a manner you see fit as to aid in setting a standard for the rest of the forum.

Oh. I must have miscalculated the amount of users who actually produce drugs. That could be it   ;)

Yes, well once I start, I'll be sure to update everyone.

I don't make drugs either, nor do i finish most of my synthesis to total completion.. often I do a test run and work on ways to improve it vs actually calculating yield, etc.
Also my chemicals are often unknown purities, and i have difficulty determining purity, etc so my yields may not mean much.

As you've already assumed, very few of the users here actually make the compounds which we speak of.  That would be illegal in most countries ;).  Often times however, the yields can be found hidden deep in the discussion, usually informally presented.

Check out:

Buchanan et al. 2008. Emerging Use of Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry as a Tool for Discrimination of 3,4-MDMA by Synthetic Route. Analytical Chem 80 (9): 3350-3356.

They test three different routes to MDMA, all based on 'clandestine' recipes from Shulgin, Uncle Fester, Strike, etc. Most importantly, they report yields for each step of the process starting from saf all the way to the final product. To summarize:

saf-->iso via KOH and a PTC (using the PTC is kinda cheating IMO but should still be roughly comparable to using CaO...) 87% yield

iso-->ketone via peroxyacid 46%, (sadly they don't use the Wacker so no info on that one :( )

ketone-->amine via Al/Hg 65%, via NaBH4 68%, via Pt/H2 78%

amine base-->HCl salt 95%

In the end that's approximately a 25% yield.
