Where do you keep your lab?
« on: October 16, 2009, 02:52:06 AM »
Starting my own lab, I am highly curious as to where a good lab is keep at? Where do you all keep your labs? Closests? Garage?

I was thinking of making my lab mobile, for easier purposes.

Garage.  If you keep your garage open, it looks even less suspicious.  Not to mention the 12-24ft wide door that can be opened within a couple seconds for quick ventilation.  The only issue that exists with this is you have to get creative with your water supply, etc.

Don't make your lab look like a lab.
If it looks like you do pottery, wood or metal working where you actually do the chemistry, you'll be much better off IMO.

This is good advice. I guess not leaving chemicals and equipment out would do you some good.

This is my thinking as well, and because in one spot the back wall is a bathroom it was easy to tap into a drain line. Picked up water supply from the water heater. In other words, putting in a sink was easy.

I also tapped into the dryer vent with a flapper valve on both ends--no steamy air on me and no xylene vapors into the dryer. Of course timing is everything when using it.

I think the biggest liability for me is that I have a gas water heater in the garage, so I have to be really careful about fumes building up. If I had a basement I would seriously consider it, but I'd be concerned about fumes rising into the rest of the house.

My grandmas no chemistry master but plays around a lot trying to learn so i asked her where she keeps her setup:

In my houses extra bathroom. The cabinets provide plenty of storage, the shower is dreadfully important for lab accidents and once i replace the door with something a bit stronger i can use the bathroom as a place to lock myself in and destroy evidence in case of a raid.

Doesn't your grandma find it cramped in there?

go out and purchase one or two of those oversized rubber containers they sell at places like wally world.  Save the various bubble wrappings glassware tends to come in when purchased, if not saved no biggie, you can buy it by the roll at places that do packing, think "brown", also save those annoying styro thingamajiggies.  Now line those containers with the sytros about 1/4 way or more depending on what your packing for a kit and place your various items in whatever bubble wrap is on hand.  This setup is cheap, very easy to get moved if need bee, and blends in no matter what the occassion.

You got to go?  No one would think anything of you for throwing a couple in the back of your ride, or sitting in your basement under a blanket or pile of newspapers.  One containers can easily hold (4) 250 rounds (2) 500 rounds (1) 1000 erly (1) flat bottom (1) 1000 round bottom, a sep and 500 ml addition funnel, magnetic stirrer, 2 stands, etc, etc.... er... at least that what I hear  ::)  Ok so we wont get into the second container.

Plus the rubber insulates as well for those that don't have the soft touch. :-)  As to the preferred location?  One would assume anywhere that is not conspicuous.  I'd be the person who against better judgment feels the need to tinker at 3 in the morning.  Now this is not unusual since many know me to work graves anyways, however a different story if you are tearing away in your shed in the backyard in order to get at your toys now wouldn't it?  Either way good luck.

Im sorry folks but I have been meaning to lock this for quite some time as I do not feel OK about our members here blurting out where they keep there Lab. This seems like a huge liability issue for our members and I just can not allow it.
There once were some bees and you took all there stuff!
You pissed off the wasp now enough is enough!!!
