Most wanted/useful glassware and equiptment?
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:35:02 PM »
I've been wondering, what is the most useful and wanted piece of glassware for the labratory?

Is it the beaker, flask, RBF with 24/40 ground glass joints, or what?
Also what sort of equipment would you say was the most useful? These would be things such as water aspirators, magnetic stirrers, etc?

Speaking of rotavaps, What do you call those plugs which you attach to a tap, you turn the water on and it creates a vaccum.
Usually used with a bhuchner filter. My mind has gone totally blank!

Sorry Vesp, havent seen you replied. Well because theyre so goddamn convenient...theres nothing worse than to have to setup all of your distillation apparatus to simply evaporate a shitload of organic solvent. With the rotavapor, everything is setup, you just connect the appropriate RBF to the neck and lower the lever into the water bath. Apply the vaccum and let it spin. Beautiful thing...extremely pricey though !

Sep funnel! >:( There is nothing getto that can take the place of a real sep funnel trust me. Almost everything else can be improvised but not a sep funnel.

Bullshit. Its messy and dangerous when dealing with toxic compounds. It acts nothing like a true sep funnle as you do not get as clean a seperation. I have many getto forms including what you speak of but having a sep funnel once I know that nothing compairs.

Rotovap, more stoppers, and some mantles.

ye im with sedit on the sepfunnel.

but then again you can always setup a continous extraction setup with out ever needing a sep funnel.

but this is not as easy as using a sep funnel.

so how much for a rotovap? and how big/small is it?
i have seen a few largeish ones (that hold about a 5litre RBF) for about $5000 IIRC

Interesting, I didn't think the sep funnel would be that big of a deal -- I always use em' but I've also came up with other ways using a vac and a glass rod into another container.

I actually prefer to use a pipette to remove a lower layer sometimes, rather than a small sep. funnel. I think, other than the common glassware, that a magnetic stirrer is essential. I suppose they can be made though, or maybe picked up through a brewery supply store.

Are the brewery magnetic stirrers cheaper by any chance? assuming they are also a lower quality...

I haven't actually shopped for them in retail stores. I was searching ebay and salivating over all the equipment and glassware that I'm too paranoid to buy, and noticed that stirrer-hotplates were being marketed for beer brewing. I don't know if the seller was doing that to throw off the gov, or if these devices are actually used in brewing. I just figured if they are, it should be safe enough to buy one, at least in a brewery supply store.

They are used as far as I know when people are growing more yeast - they also sell very large E-flasks for this same purpose.
