Back up!
« on: December 18, 2009, 03:19:28 AM »
We were down for a while due to a copyright claim - So we've deleted the copyright book.

If you can find ANY copyright material in the FTP accounts (http://127.0.0.1/MembersFTP.html) It would be highly appreciated if you would PM me the link, so I can take care of it.

This is all unfortunate and crap, but we are still up and running and should be for a while!

I just need to fork out an ~$150 to pay for hosting for the year 2010 soon. :P

Anyways, I would love help on finding any copyright material in the FTP account, and would love to answer questions if you have any.

The copyright claims will probably only come from those very large companies that have a big important book.. an example might be Elsevier...

maybe hide the members ftp section from google like you do with the forum (in other words hide the ftp section behind authentication as well), that would cut down on the possibility of finding copyrighted items from google, etc, which is probably how it was found initially.

Its Sedits fault... Him and his damn web site are starting problems... I say we ban him before he starts anymore shit ;D

Really though I think im going to have to do something about that site because half the shit is more then likely copywritted hence the reason I look into the laws before I made the site public.

PW protecting them is my thoughts as well but I am not 100% sure how to do it just yet.

Phew, I am glad it was not me! If someone gets a chance will they kindly peruse my FTP, for offending items. Pretty much everything on there is copywrite, so should I just get rid of everything for the time being?

For the most part, it seems pretty OK.. I think I've seen most of it on erowid, and so they shouldn't care all that much...

no kidding, that sedit guy is nothing but trouble :D
i say you guys should try hiding the stuff first rather than compromise the vast mountain of literature that's available.  of course i'm not saying to refuse to take things down in order to comply or anything, just saying perhaps plead ignorance one more time and hide the ftp section from search engines.  does your web host have a policy with things of this nature that would result in any permanent action?  if so then it's probably best not to risk it but i'd seriously doubt most web hosts care other than their obligation of complying with complaints.  password protecting it is an idea but i'd think that the issue is more that the stuff is easily found by Joe Schmoe via google and whatnot.

i may not post much but i was concerned when i saw the site was down with a replacement http page from the host.  figured i'd give it 24-48 hours before i really start to worry though.

Hypothetically, if articles were hosted by a site/server combination that had little to no interest in cooperating with International publishers and/or law enforcement, or were located within a Country where such attitudes are known to prevail, then they could be freely discussed and displayed. In fact, if one wanted to make a library linking to such articles, where they were rather happily, freely displayed free from the complications of Copyright law, then one would not be in breach of copyright oneself, nor even in any risk of being claimed to be so.

Wondering what Countries would be of use, PNG, Timor Leste, Fiji, Cambodia, virtually anywhere in Africa, etc. Not sure about the ex-Soviet bloc at the moment, but surely someone here has links (especially via hyperlab) to someone who would be prepared to register a Site/Domain?

I think the reference request thread should be made off limits to anyone except the few... At least until suitable hosting can be found for the bulk of the information gathered. Sciencemadness.org keeps their reference request thread locked to all but those specially admitted, I propose this should be adopted here. Any and all FTP sites should be listed only in the private areas, that avoids the google listing/search results.

Suspect this issue is going to get a lot larger before it subsides (if it ever does), there is a LOT of money involved (think Napster, etc.).

I was thinking the ref section be limited like SM does it.
One idea might be to block this site from google and other search engine spiders..members would only find it by word of mouth, and theoretically (though, probably not... ) it would make it much harder for the  copyright claimer people to find it...

Thats the thing though Vesp..... This is protected from google...

Well all but my site :-[ ... Hence the way they got thru. SciMad does what they do because they are a public forum and even non members can read. Not so here. Technicly the whole of the site is PW protected but the fact of my site being public is going to cause issues I think. Perhaps I need to clean house atlest of Elseveir material and post that somewhere just for us and us alone.

I would hate to take my site completely away from the public eye but if needed I would personaly destroy every single file on it to Save The Vespiary!

I don't think it is going to be that big of a deal, honestly.

-- but I was saying, we should be able to hid your site as well from google, yahoo, etc - so even if it finds a link to this site.. it shouldn't store it or crawl around it forming a summary, etc...
