Only two I can think of are chlorination of naphthalene followed by oxidation , or the easier phthalic acid salt/pyrosulfate route.

thanks. I heard of a Mercuric sulfate/oxidation reaction, which doesn't work to well, so hearing of these is good. Ill look into it.

I've heard of KMnO4 oxidation of mixed xylenes is possible to get phathlic anhydride... after extracting the other acids formed via MP,BP, solubility... or isn't naphthalene and KMnO4 possible? I've heard this as well... but only very briefly... No idea if it really works.

From naphthalene with potassium-permangante oxidation naphthaldehyde can be obtained what can be easily oxidized to phthalic acid what can be easily converted to the anhydride.

http://www.orgsyn.org/orgsyn/prep.asp?prep=cv2p0523

And the xylene oxidation is also an easy way to phthalic acid, the only problem is, that they usually sell xylene isomer mix what can be hardly separated.

//But phthalic anhydride is a really cheap chemical and it is actually not a drug or explosive precusor. Maybe you should try to buy it at a local chem. supply shop...

Thankyou EVILBlaze, I got a quote so it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks also for the link to the reaction schematic.

Actually, permanganate will take naphthalene all the way to phthalic acid - see the rhodium archive on erowid. Too bad naphthalene has been replaced with p-dichlorobenzene in the US. I've still seen it in Asian food markets, which are poorly regulated.

I think I saw at sciencemadness a lot of time ago that simply heating phatallic acid will evaporate water and sublimate phatallic anhydride...

I have seen naphthalene as a moth repellent many times -- it still exists, it just might be a bit harder to find.

If phatallic acid is what you're looking for, phtalates are widely available as plasticizers.
