IRC

Does anyone else think an IRC chat would be good for building up the site?
It would also make it easy to ask questions for immediate response/help.
I would be willing to moderate chat or idle the channel whenever I can if needed.

I think it is a good idea. I'll look into getting one, do you know any really  easy ways to get one going?
I'm sure I can figure it out if not :P

http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/ircd/server-request.html
You can get a sub-server from EFnet, ask around on the tech board on shroomery, they're very helpful. I used to be an admin/mod on a game forum that used IRC, it was pretty helpful to most of the users to have it available.

Looks like a good how-to, I'd use the windows method if you aren't familiar with Linux.

For the time being I have registered a channel on shroomerys IRC.
The channel name is #vesp
You can join it by opening mIRC and typing /server irc.shroomery.org
waiting for it to connect then /join #vesp

SILC looks interesting. I have never tried it but it looks very secure.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/SILC_(protocol)

This feature probably sets it apart from other protocols with security addons:

"When messages are secured with key material generated with the SKE protocol or previously agreed upon key material (for example, passphrases) SILC provides security even when the SILC server may be compromised."

Its supported by one of the most popular open source multiprotocol clients, Pidgin.
