methylation of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde
« on: April 03, 2010, 05:36:28 AM »
swim has been interested in reading up on routes to 2,5-dmb and the only thing stopping him from having a lovely dream is this methylation.  swim's only article on this methylation uses dimethyl sulfate.  swim does not trust himself with such toxic compounds.

does anyone have any references on other ways to 2,5-dmb or words of wisdom on methylations in general?  seems like something a swim shouldn't f- around with even in fictional dreams, but he'd really love to get his hands on 2,5-dmb someday and this is the only thing stopping happy dreams.  swim has no experience with any methylating agents but even MeI makes him weary.  any safer methylating agents that can be used in this scenario?

There was a nice write up at SM about generating MeBr and directing it straight into a solution of the phenol to be methylated to avoid exposure, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.  I'm pretty certain I've linked to it from here before too somewhere.  Apparently teflon or glass tubing is needed for this as it can eat through other common tubing.

Another agent that has been discussed is dimethyl carbonate, which is relatively safe and can be formed from CO2 and MeOH under certain conditions with certain catalysts, but I don't know a lot about it.
