Damping off of seeds
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:24:30 AM »
I was having problems getting my seeds started and did some research on damping off.  I found a reference to a product that I can't seem to find now - it was taken off the market but everyone seemed to be swearing by it.  So I looked up the MSDS and found out that the primary ingredient was 8-hydroxyquinoline.  So I went to the chemistry cabinet and found some, mixed it with distilled water (3% solution).  I microwave my seed starting mix 3 damp at 3 min a shot in a plastic bag, cool it an zap it again 3 times.  Then when I start my seeds I spray the seeds before I plant them and then another mist over the top after planted and haven't had any mold or damp off since.

Very nice! I hear small amounts of copper sulfate, as well as things like pepper and cinnamon work as well. Damp off is a really annoyance, but a lot of times it can be avoided by carefully watering the seeds -- of course, this depends on what the seeds are.

Do you know of any OTC sources for 8-hydroxyquinoline?

I got it on ebay but it's a fairly innocent chemical as far as I can tell.
BTW I forgot I mixed it in Isopropyl not water

Thank heavens  for labels cause I can't remember worth a darn - great time to be learning chemistry - but heck it's a lot like cooking - I just got to get a feel for the ingredients!

I even wrote the CAS on it 148-24-3

"No Damp" was the product name and oxine benzoate is an alternate name for it - try hydroponics

A fan for air circulation and some vermiculite usually works just as well as chemicals, also, sow thinly and keep the seedlings cool once they've germinated.

This would be good for cacti seeds - those little guys often have problems. Generally you sterilize the dirt, but added protection might be helpful.
