SWIDP is getting ready to reduce some TMP2NP with urushibara again and they are wondering if denatured EtOH will screw up the production of the catalyst. What about using denatured EtOH for the other procedures in the reduction? The synthesis by Antibody2 is being used and SWIDP doesn't want to purchase pure EtOH or make their own anymore, but of course they will continue to do so if using denatured will cause a failure. This denatured EtOH will be obtained from the hardware store.
i can't think of any reason for not using denaturated EtOH as long as it's denat. with MeOH, a ketone additive will probably be converted to the alcohol and eats a bit of catalyst. so, you should simply prepare a slight excess of Ni, which you will do anyways.
Well... the denatured from this hardware store does contain ~5% MeOH, but most denatured also has other things and since it's from the hardware store it doesn't have a complete list. SWIDP was hoping someone that did the catalyst preparation and this synthesis with denatured could post their experience. I guess SWIDP will continue to brew their EtOH.
