Thought this was an interesting name for a chemistry site. Excerpt below found there.
Now neverminding the drug store variety, if this stuff could be picked up for say $5-$10 for a 20L jug then it could be worth separating the goodies. Haven't priced it lately but BTX is pretty cheap stuff but you would probably have to buy at least a drum

One hundred kg of coal will yield approximately 3 kg of tar; distillation of that tar will produce about 1 kg of aromatic compounds.

Isnt the aromatic content of coal tar mainly benzene and methyl benzenes (toluene, xylene)?? with a small percent of napthalenes and other polycyclics?
This would make it a fruitless adventure which would ruin a flask post distillation for somethin that can be bought in the store...

Yep, coal tar is mostly aromatic HC's, that's why I've been very wary of using potential carcinogens to treat my dandruff. Surprised

Yep, that's what BTX is (Benzene Toluene Xylene) one of the cheapest commodity chemicals which as you say is hardly worth while when even at the one at a time purchase Toluene CP goes for $62 for 20L jug around here. Drums were $153 not too long ago and of course benzene prices have skyrocketed for little users like us. Hell the Residue Analysis grade I always got for $42 for 4L now goes for over a $100 due to all the hype promulgated by Big Brother.

Coal tar also has appreciable levels of aniline and the toluidines.

So best to leave coal tar/creosote distillation to the refineries unless you have nothing better to do. I did distill some creosote like trees in my yard once just to see what the hell was in it and sure enough quite a bit of cresol was in the steam distillate. Man, the smell of that shit straight will almost knock you over.
