Safrole...isosafrole???

A few years ago, on Phish tour, there was a tanish powdery substance going around called "Sass". It was taken by many with great-clean results. I am wondering if this was safrole or isosafrole. Anyone have a clue on this one? I never has researched the psychoactivity of either of these two. I know this is really not a Chem question but I want to identify this chem for further reference.

Neither safrole or isosafrole are solids, they are both liquids at room temperature.
You wouldnt want to eat safrole as is... its toxic to your liver, hence why they banned the use of sassafras in root beer and for any internal use.

Thanks for the info.......I wonder what the hell this substance was. I'm sure it was psychoactive and similar to MDMA and MDA....in ways. But the tannish appearance has gotten me stumped, by far. Anyone else have a clue what the possibilities are for this substance?

well was it more of a stimulant? did you get visuals? how long did it last? how much did you ingest? what did it taste like? its a bit difficult to determine from the sparse info you provided.

What's known as sass on tour is mda.

Well this was sold in 100 mg capsules. I've gotten MDA quite often but it was always a fluffy white powder. This is brown-tan with a distinct licorice taste. Very different from mdma and mda in color. It wasn't very visual unless taking 300 mg or more. But 1 or 2 capsules made me very social and talkative. It has enactogen qualities.

if it had a licorice type taste it may have been a botched synthesis of mdea. some people have said that safrole tastes like licorice (tastes like shit to me personally, but different strokes for diff folks i guess...) mdea really never gave me much in the way of visuals and kinda falls in line with what you describe. thats my best guess. however since i dont have a sample to analyze for effects (via the shulgin analyzation process) we may never know.

What you had was "X" I say ("x") because MDA, MDMA, MDEA whatever is sold as x on the streets. Anyone who is interested about this at least, probably knows that much. Not trying to flame anyone but there are some things that just sound really dumb. I know i have said some dumb shit before but never have i ever even contemplated saying something that outlandish. I swear forget synthing im just gonna start drinking sassafras oil, i mean shit what were we all thinkin? benzo wackers, and al/hg reductions, I guess it just seems funner doing all that for nothing. OH SHIT!!! I get it, thats why they banned sassafras oil. And we thought we were smart. Hats off to stoopid! He figured it all out after all that internet searching. I vote stoopid to be the head cheif, inhouse chemist.
