| Will N,N-Dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate work as a substitute for Dimethylsulfate in the methylation of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde? If not does anyone have any suggestions on routes to aquire dimethylsulfate? |

Just because this strange chemical has "dimethyl" and "sulfate" in its name, doesn't mean it can be used as alkylating agent. Do some research before you ask. You have made only 3 post so far and all of them were some stupid questions that could be answered by reading any organic chemistry textbook. So get your lazy ass to the library and study some more before asking.
And if you have by some strange way obtained or synthesized 2-OH-5-MeO benzaldehyde you should know how to get your hands on some dimethylsulfate. |

mmm in the light of looking like a flamer opportunist i didnt reply to this thread... thought i might just let it marinate for a bit with the other users...
To answer your rediculous question... no... it cant be used as a substitute... and how did you make (or buy) N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate and 2-OH-5-MeO Benzaldehyde if you cant get dimethylsulfate?
Couldnt DMS made from sodium sulfate and methyliodide?

| I believe that dimethylsulphate is made by vacuum distilling dry MeOH \ methylsulphate mix |

At least where I live buying dimethyl sulphate is like buying cyanides: you need a special license for it. So the idea of being able to procure whatever benzaldehyde and more, but not being able to get dimethyl sulphate is not that strange at all.
But luckily there is more than one alternative for it to be found if one cares to UTFSE a bit |

Or you can solve this riddle:
The first three letters of an extinct species of arthropods that appeared in the Cambrian era and flourished throughout the lower Palaeozoic before slowly declining to extinction.
The first letter of a North-African country which had a GDP of $1110 per head in 1994.
Then follows an univalent organic radical bearing two carbon and five hydrogen atoms.
The first three letters of a primeval sea god from Greek mythology that had many children who were all hideous monsters.
Followed by the socialist party of Croatia, which was formed in Serb-majority areas of Croatia in the summer of 1990.
And finish off with the past tense of the verb 'to eat'. |

Not necessarily..
Or you UTFSE,
Or you spend equally as much time solving the riddle and meanwhile improve the mind.
So as long as there is information being transferred, it's a win-win situation.
Then how can you talk about wasting time?

1. Take the first three letters of Trilobyte ----> Tri
2. Take the first letter of Morocco -------> m
3. Univalent organic radical ------> ethyl
4. Take the first three letters of Phorcys -----> Pho
5. Take first letters of Socijalistička partija Hrvatske -----> sph
6. Paste tense of eat ---------> ate
===> Trimethyl Phosphate. |
