Statecraft
Strategies for a Changing World
By Margaret Thatcher
2) Doing what is right usually requires the will to do what is difficult.
In an effort to rebuild his war machine, Saddam Hussein has spent billions of dollars earmarked to buy food. The result: mass starvation among ordinary Iraqis, despite the generous oil-for-food allowances granted under U.N sanctions. The right solution - forcibly ending Hussein's brutal rule - is crystal clear.
Thatcher recognizes that while the solution is clear, many liberal leaders lack the will needed for such a strong step. Saddam has gambled on their weakness too, and so far he has made the right bet. Many world leaders have allowed their sympathy for the Iraqi people, or their greed for cheap Iraqi oil, to deter them from taking forceful action against Iraq's dictator. Thatcher condemns this dangerous compromise. Because of it Saddam has had four years free of U.N. weapons inspectors, and the Iraqi people are still poor and oppressed.
By reminding the reader of Hussein and the need to be rid of him, Thatcher emphasizes that military force must remain a tool of statecraft. All too often, leaders have avoided problems posed by the Husseins and bin Ladens of the world because half-measures offer an easy way out. Military might is useless without the will to use it, and America's leaders should never hesitate to eliminate those who threaten us. This is not to say that might makes right. It just means that we must be confident enough in our convictions to realize that right often requires might.

He He:
Sam, that t-shirt advertisement on the left hand side of the screen of the link you posted is hilarious.
I never get too involved with public political discourse, I have my personal philosophies and I keep them to myself. However I am quite vocal concerning my views on band-wagon ignoramousous.
It seems I can't go anywhere without seeing neo-Guevara t-shirts, buttons, pins, stickers, avatars, hats etc.
Surely "Motorcycle Diaries" was not the sole reason for the recent uprising in communism / socialism / pro Che Guevarism.
Now y'all that know me, don't send me a rash of shit, y'all know I play the devils advocate, and enjoy supporting the "underdog".

Who wants to be anything but rational and open-minded? Only the mentally ill. |

Who knew I'd find you guys? Finally. Unbelievable. Apparently I've been more slack trying to find the old hive crew than I thought after stumbling across this site tonight.
Miss Thatcher, always a pleasure. Where did we leave off?
Methyl_ethyl - one of my favourite hive-babes. Quick wit and bottomless empathy.
Sniff... I missed you guys.
Oh yes, and Sam, oddly enough I've been nostalgic for your rants too.

| Correction: You're ruining Synthetika... This is a Chemistry site, and while this is in fact the 'go ahead and fuck off' forum, I see you more often than not just posting shit solely for the purpose of getting people riled up. You instigate a rivalry with whoever doesn't agree with your socio-political views, and that shit trickles down into all the forums. Chemistry discussions become peppered with comments about how somebody's a jackass because of what they said in one of those 'argument threads' you seem so fond of starting. Well, Sam, I've seen you do this shit before elsewhere, and now that I have the power, I don't really feel like watching you do it here. You're walking on eggshells, my friend. |
