a CAT named KMnO4

SWIM has been dreaming of meeting this CAT as outlined in the FAQ,
but SWIM is worried after reading what others had to say about this method.
SWIM would like to know if there are any other dreamers who may also
have tried this method of approaching this way.
SWIM thanks those for thier notes in advance. |

The cold synthesis using KMnO4 will work however clean pseudo is absolutely necessary. Swiy will need to clean psuedo using one of the methods posted elsewhere. Ensure the ratio of pseudo to KMnO4 is accurate (follow the procedure)or the product will be over or under oxidized. Keeping the temperature of the reaction low is also important as KMnO4 is a strong oxidizer and needs to be slowed down. Post rxn workup with cold dry acetone washes.

SWIM gives his thanks for instilling some confidence,
and also for the speedy reply.
SWIM will be sure to jot down some notes during the course of the experiment,
and will pass them along through the spirit medium known as "Mr_Orange" |

Swirh tried the synth , but with rather bad results and after ~ 5 min he began to smell the sweet pistacio ordour ( Benzaldehyd ) indicating that Swirhs pseudo has been reduced to crap , so bee careful with the exact amount of KMnO4 or else
nothing good can result same goes for the temprature ~ 3 C° is best for these pourposes lower will lead to a slow reaction , and partial freezin .... |

SWIh has done a cold CAT synth with KMnO4 and ephedrine sulphate. It worked fine, but the ephedrine sulphate was in pure powder form in a bottle from a chem supplier. Can't reflect on the "FAQ" because SWIh has never seen it and no link/quote/ref was provided. |

Does anyone have a reference to the less documented procedure that uses KMnO4 to oxidize (pseudo)ephedrine in the presence of acetic acid?
I remember reading about this method working much better compared to the "FAQ's" that're all over the net. |
