I have this strange glass-construction, and I don't have the slightest idea what it is for. Can anyone fill me in?

Anyway, it looks like it's a distillation fraction reciever. It fits inbetween your vac adapter and your recieving flask, and it allows you to collect different fractions of your distillation into different flasks without having to mess with your vacuum too much. The stopcocks are there to allow you to control what has vacuum and what doesn't.

MaDMAx had an image that he made describing the construction of one of these, but I cannot goddamn find it... Anyway, he has another section in Rhodium where he describes one of these. It's at the bottom of this link.

Wow, that's a mouthful.

This looks more like a three way valve with isolation used for variable reflux rate adjustment although it could be used for other applications such as fraction diverting (cutter) or simple flow control.

What a beautiful piece of work! I'd be afraid to wash it as that's were I always end up breaking glassware, in the sink. Now I use a soft plastic flexible sink with overhead spout made from a 72 liter polypropylene storage container.
