the reaction doesn't happen at much less than 100 degrees

IIRC, if concentrated hypophosphorous acid is used instead of red phosphorus, the reaction may proceed at a lower temperature. As geez put it, it can proceed simply from the heat given off by ones hand. Other than that, for HI/RP reaction, the heat is required.
