Spyware

Window Washer is known spyware and should not be used.
A better tool would be TweakUI, available from Microsoft for Windows 95 or later. No cost, spyware free, and does 95% of the same function as Window Washer -- without the spyware.

If I ever suspected that someone might be looking at my hard drive, I would make sure it was a brand spanking new one.
It is very difficult to erase all traces from a Windows system. The OS itself leaves stuff all over the place and then you have a journalling file system, which leaves stuff all over the place at a lower level.
Far better to boot from a portable drive that you can stash somewhere when not in use. Nowadays, they are cheap too. |

HEy now,
IF window washer is spyware whats a good substitute?Whenever I download the program Tweak UI the files unzip and then doesnt do anything.I did download mozilla and it works great.Im wondering about uninstalling IE and java.Is this possible without fucking up any of my programs it says it may destroy?Im very uneducated in this field. As far as booting from as usb stick Im not sure how this is done. You guys have to understand that we arent all computer geeks. If you guys could make this a little more understandable for the people who apparently need it?Who can give us a full write up on how to get us all very safe in the long run?Anyone up for the task?

I haven't used Windows for ages, but as I recall, you need to right click on the TweakUI file and install it. This will add some options to Control Panel. It doesn't wipe anything, but you can choose various privacy settings to stop it storing so much on your machine. I don't think this is sufficient though.
You don't need to uninstall IE, just install the windows version of Firefox. It's a more secure browser from the start. Then in preferences, you can go to the Privacy tab and set History to 0, Don't Save Form Information or Passwords, Clear Download Manager on Exit, Clear Cookies on Exit, Set Cache to Zero. Disable Java in Web Features.
