As would be expected for a reaction as ubiquitous as the Friedel-Crafts acylation there are a
plethora of protocols available from the literature. However, many of these involve gradual
addition of aluminium (III)chloride to the reaction mixture, an operation which is not always
trivial, especially on a large scale when the hygroscopic solid can become very difficult to
handle. This method overcomes any such problems and I have found it to be operationally very
simple both on the scale mentioned and up to 350mmol of substrate. The yields are also good
