Who owns the servers?

This is what happened when an underground website (shadowcrew.com) was taken over by the US Secret Service and continued to operate:

The article focuses on how it meant that, for a short while at least, the Secret Service was effectively operating a website dedicated to illegal activities. Fine, and a makes for a great take-the-piss-out-of-the-feds story. But what is not so clear, and much more interesting IMO, is to what extent the everyday activity of the site and its message boards were monitored before they moved in and began to bust people and then ultimately shut the site.

Worries me a bit, anyway.

Actually the server from synthetikal seems to be in the US, looks like it is in Atlanta.

Thats sad and true. Atlanta Georgia USA, subprovider in the Netherlands, ISP in the USA.

I recommend US citiziens to use an anon-proxy

After 20+ hours of searching 100's of offshore servers,
And the need for us to move quickly from our old host,
We had the best intentions, despite what a few members have
refused to understand, who have given me a hard time,
The reason is simple,

I asked for help from all members, to help find a reliable offshore host,
And for the moment, this is what we have,
Considering we can get 100gb hardrive space and 500gb bandwidth, in the us for $60/month,
As opposed to 70/month for 500mg space, and 10 gb bandwidth,
this choice was not that hard to make,
And since, we do not want to follow the hive's footsteps, and host illegal content,
we made a business decision that we would, lift our game, and go for plans, that this whole community could use better,
We did get ssl, and we think that even if we were offshore, our content would slacken, and we would eventually be closed,

So let's just test the water here,
We have only signed a month contract, and now we have full controll, with cpanel, so moving again, would be painless,.

If somebody wants to help me look, for offshore hosts, that are around 5gb/50gb bandwidth for under $30US,
Well just let me know, and we'll move,

Being physically located within any member states of the Anglo Saxon oligarchy is worrying. The site could be taken over an run by The Man and nobody would be the wiser. It would be more reassuring to have the site physically located within a juristiction with stronger civil privacy and free-speech legislation and traditions.
