Posted this at WD's some time ago, but seems that the local tweakers there are interested in more than a dull LWR ;-P
Anyhow... Pending experiments involves reacting (insert some legal aromatic side chains here)benzylmagnesiumchloride with dimethylacetamide(DMAA). I'll try it out this week, but I just wanted to check out if anyone had some pointers for the reaction.
Ill use 1XBzMgCl, 1.1XDMAA in diethylether (usual "grignard concentrations" of everything).
As I dont want to be pouring etheral BzMgCl solutions from one flask to the other, the DMAA will be added to the grig. reactant.
I was thinking of cooling everything to about zero degs. and dripping in the DMAA while stirring like a madman. Once it has stirred for a few hours, ill hit it with the hydrochloric acid, and proceed as usual. Can't see why it's shouldn't give kick ass yields of P2P. If it really works as easy as it looks, it's going to be a favorite p2p method. DMAA is less than 20$ per Litre
Sounds good?
I have an article describing the reaction if anyone is interested.
Read some about those (the N-methoxy amides). They give very high yields. The price is however very steep when compared to simple n,n-dimethylacetamide...
