The Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine

Can magnets relieve arthritis pain? Does the scent of lavender calm the nerves? Is St. John's Wort a mood enhancer? Authoritative, objective and in tune with the subjects that matter to students and researchers, Gale presents four volumes of current, unbiased information on alternative and complementary medical practices. Covering all aspects of the subject --Therapies, Conditions/Diseases, Herbs/Plants and People -- the Encyclopedia identifies 150 types of alternative medicine being practiced today, including reflexology, acupressure, acupuncture, chelation therapy, kinesiology, yoga, chiropractic, Feldenkrais, polarity therapy, detoxification, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, biofeedback, Ayurveda and osteopathy. For the practitioner or interested patient, there are current training requirements, listings of organizations, as well as descriptions of treatments.

Information on recommended therapies for specific disorders and diseases, medicinal uses for plants and herbs are balanced by conclusions of studies on efficacy and analysis of current levels of acceptance by traditional scientists and doctors. Biographies of pioneers in the field -- including Deepak Chopra, Edward Bach and David Palmer --appear as sidebars through the text. Included are 39 sidebars. Each volume contains a color photo insert containing images of herbs. There are more than 275 disease/condition entries, 300 herb/remedy entries, and 150 therapies.

Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine 16th Edition

Description: The 15th edition of Harrison's is cited by Brandon/Hill as both an "initial purchase" and as part of a "minimal core collection." New to the 16th edition of this substantial work is a heightened focus on clinical practice, with emphasis given to the approach to the patient, differential diagnosis, treatment options, and disease prevention. Some topics are new or receive expanded treatment, including the immune system and HIV/AIDS, stem cell and gene transfer in clinical medicine, radiation therapy, Clostridium difficile-associated disease, bioterrorism, disease screening, perimenopausal management, hormone replacement therapy, end-of-life care, and a new multi- chapter section on critical care medicine. Of the staggering 379 chapters, 46 are new or by new authors and the remainder have been revised. The new edition also features color illustration throughout rather than the additional color atlas of earlier editions.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Book Description THE NEW COLOR OF MEDICINE HUNDREDS OF DIAGRAMS AND CLINICAL PHOTOS INTEGRATED INTO THE TEXT – FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FULL COLOR *This description refers to the single-volume of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 16/e. Gale Science of Everyday Things 4 Volumes

Volume 1: Chemistry "...Real-Life Chemistry is "a guide to help teachers give struggling students a view of how chemistry applies today and has been applied in the past in real-life science..."

Volume 2: Physics
"The first two of a projected four volumes examine the disciplines of chemistry and physics from an interesting perspective: eight or nine major topics, arranged by increasing complexity, are explained through a total of 40 entries...The descriptions will interest readers, yet are academic, and appropriate for students and teacher reference. Fascinating real-life applications within the same entry range from commonplace examples to extraordinary...For research and instruction, these volumes are enormously useful."

Volume3:Real-Life Biology
"...recommended for all libraries from high school through college, as well as public libraries. The general reader will appreciate the clear explanations and discussions of complex topics, and teachers and scientists will use it as a source of real-life examples to illustrate their own presentations."

Volume 4: Real-Life Earth Science
The purpose of the series is to explain scientific phenomena using common real-world examples. Real-Life Biology and Real-Life Earth Science each have about 40 entries covering various scientific phenomena and principles...Entries, written at a level accessible to high-school students and the general reader, average about 10 pages in length. The "Where to Learn More" section provides about 10 books and Web sites for further information. Black-and-white line drawings and photographs supplement the text...index offers subject access to the contents of each volume; in addition, there is a cumulative subject index of all 4 volumes. The basic facts provided in these books are available elsewhere, but the "Real-Life Applications" may be interesting to some. Recommended for high-school and public libraries."

Paperback 320 pages April 2005
This Second edition contains consise information on 134 carefully chosen named organic reactions - the standard set of undergraduate and graduate synthetic organic chemistry courses. Each reaction is detailed with clearly drawn mechanisms, references from the primary literature, and well-written accounts covering the mechanical aspects of the reactions, and the details of side reactions and substrate limitations. For the 2nd edition the complete text has been revised and updated, and four new reactions have been added: Baylis-Hillmann Reaction, Sonogashira Reaction, Pummerer Reaction, and the Swern Oxidation und Cyclopropanation. An essential text for students preparing for exams in organic chemistry.

Organic Chemistry (2000)
Jonathan Clayden, Nick Greeves, Stuart Warren, and Peter Wothers
Description
This new and innovative text helps students develop a deeper understanding of organic chemistry. It treats the subject as a coherent whole, complete with numerous logical connections, consequences, and an underlying structure and "language." Employing an approach based on mechanism and reaction type, the book emphasizes understanding ideas rather than merely memorizing facts. It shows students how to realistically draw molecules and mechanisms to reveal the fundamental chemistry.

Using a fresh, accessible writing style as well as examples from everyday life, the authors explain the basics of organic chemistry carefully and thoroughly. A special focus on mechanism, orbitals, and stereochemistry helps students gain a solid comprehension of important factors common to all reactions. The book's innovative design enhances clarity and instruction with boxes that separate summary information and other material from the main text; a variety of colors that draw attention to items such as atoms, molecules, and orbitals; and figures that are drawn in red with significant parts emphasized in black. Early chapters feature carbonyl group reactions, and later chapters systematically develop the chemistry through discussions of spectroscopy, stereochemistry and chemical reactions.

Each chapter opens with a "Connections" box, divided into three columns:

* Building on: Details material from previous chapters that relate to the current chapter
* Arriving at: Provides a guide to the content of the chapter
* Looking forward to: Previews later chapters, which develop and expand on the current material

Features

* A carefully developed, extensively marked core textbook for undergraduate organic chemistry courses
* Emphasizes understanding rather than merely learning facts: new ideas emerge naturally
* Emphasizes mechanism, orbitals, and stereochemistry supplying students with a solid understanding of important factors common to all reactions and allowing interpretation/prediction of reactions not previously met
* Organic chemistry emerges as a coherent whole, with logical connections, consequences, and an underlying structure and "language"
* Early chapters deal with carboynl group reactions, reflecting the increasingly widespread view that addition to the carbonyl group is the easiest reaction for students to understand
