Understanding Biotechnology 2003
by Aluizio Borem, Fabricio R. Santos, David E. Bowen
http://rapidshare.de/files/1856747/understanding_biotech.rar.html
Abstract
An objective, thorough, and accessible introduction to biotechnology.
Biotechnology will have an increasingly profound impact on human
health, agriculture, the environment, and society itself.
Understanding Biotechnology offers an introduction to biotechnology
that is balanced, accurate, current, thorough, and accessible to both
non-specialists and professionals.
The authors begin with a brief history of biotechnology and an
introduction to the underlying principles of genetic engineering.
Next, they review every key area of biotechnology research,
thoroughly addressing both technical practice and implications
including biosafety and ethical issues.
Understanding Biotechnology presents careful and complete
introductions to cloning, gene therapy, pharmacogenomics, molecular
markers, forensic DNA, bioremediation, and biodiversity, as well as a
full chapter on the risks of bioterrorism. It also includes an
extensive glossary and detailed references for further study. |

From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Rick Strassman conducted DEA-approved clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected sixty volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical that is also manufactured by the human brain, consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many volunteers reported convincingly encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, especially "aliens". Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives.
Strassman's research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by Rene Descartes to be the seat of the soul. DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, ficilitates the soul's movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and deat experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that alien abduction experiences are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.

Chiral Separation Techniques:A Practical Approach
edited by G. Subramanian
http://rapidshare.de/files/2182172/Chiral_separation_tecniques.pdf.html
Preface
During the past two decades there has been intense interest in the development and application of chiral chromatographic methods, particularly in the
pharmaceutical industries. This is driven both by desire to develop and exploit “good science” and by the increasing pressure by regulatory authorities over the past ten years against the marketing of racemic mixtures.
The regulation of chiral drug provides a good demonstration of the mutual relationship between progress in scientific methodology and regulatory guidelines. It has also provided a common platform in establishing good understanding between international regulatory authorities and pharamceutical industries, leading to a consensus in recognition of the global nature of pharmaceutical development. This has provided a great challenge for the industries to seek techniques that are efficient, economical and easy to apply, in the manufacture of enantiopure products.
The versatility of chiral stationary phases and its effecitve application in both analytical and large-scale enantioseparation has been discussed in the earlier book ‘A Practical Approach to Chiral Separation by Liquid Chromatography’ (Ed. G. Subramanian, VCH 1994). This book aims to bring to the forefront the current development and sucessful application chiral separation techniques, thereby providing an insight to researchers, analytical and industrial chemists, allowing a choice of methodology from the entire spectrum of available techniques.

Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards: An Indexed Guide to Published Data (5th ed. 2 Vol Set)
L. Bretherick, P. G. Urben, Martin J. Pitt, L. A. Battle, P.G. Urben (Editor)
http://rapidshare.de/files/2405938/Bretherick__s_Handbook_of_Reactive_Chemical_Hazards__Volume_1__1999___6th_Ed_.pdf.html
http://rapidshare.de/files/2394468/Bretherick__s_Handbook_of_Reactive_Chemical_Hazards__Volume_2__1999___6th_Ed_.pdf.html
Book Description
Reviews of previous editions:
'an outstanding text...thoroughly recommended'
Loss Prevention Bulletin
'a book that should be in every laboratory, chemical plant, emergency response and fire control center, school and college ... I commend this book to anyone concerned with chemical safety and hygiene'
Chemical and Engineering News
'..a book that every chemist should have on their shelf'
New Scientist
'This book continues to be an essential source of reference for all those about to embark upon unknown brews and concoctions of seemingly innocent chemicals'
Chemistry and Industry
'The indexes are excellent, and there are very useful cross-references between different species and different reactions.'
Choice
'It is also a very helpful and quick entry into the literature on the many unstable chemicals that have been synthesized and characterized during the 20th century.'
Choice
'Bretherick' is widely accepted as the reference work on reactive chemical hazards and is essential for all those working with chemicals. It includes every chemical for which documented information on reactive hazards has been found. The text covers over 5000 elements and compounds and as many again of secondary entries involving two or more compounds. One of its most valuable features is the extensive cross referencing throughout both sections which links similar compounds or incidents not obviously related.
The sixth edition has been completely updated and revised by Peter Urben and contains documented information on hazards and appropriate references up to 1999 Volume 1 is devoted to specific information on the stability of the listed compounds, or the reactivity of mixtures of two or more of them under various circumstances. Each compound is identified by an UPAC-based name, the CAS registry number, its empirical formula and structure. Each description of an incident or violent reaction gives reference to the original literature. Each chemical is classified on the basis of similarities in structure or reactivity, and these groups are listed alphabetically in Volume 2. The group entries contain a complete listing of all the compounds in Volume 1 assigned to that group to assist cross referral to similar compounds. Volume 2 also contains hazard topic entries arranged alphabetically, some with lists. Appendices include a fire related data table for higher risk chemicals, indexes of registry numbers and chemical names as well as reference abbreviations and a glossary.
