A Guidebook to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry (6th Edition)
Peter Sykes
http://rapidshare.de/files/2080771/GUIDEBOOK_TO_MECHANISM_IN_O.PDF.html
Reader's Description
Peter Sykes' guidebook formats more as a reference to organic reactions such as nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic substitution, nucleophilic addition to carbonyl, elimination reactions, radical reactions and symmetry-controlled reactions such as pericyclic reactions. It is well written, clear, and succinct that undergraduate and graduate students will welcome it as a companion to an organic course. Sykes also discusses topics that are often omitted in an introductory text such as carbocations, electron-deficient species, carbanions, and linear free energy relationships. It can be thought of a compact version of Jerry March's Advanced Organic Chemistry, which is widely used as a graduate text. As a purchase guideline, I also purchased Hoffman's "Organic Chemistry: An Intermediate Text", and Bernard Miller's "Advanced Organic Chemistry", which treat the subject of electrocyclic reactions and cycloaddition more thoroughly. The portable size of Sykes makes it an excellent source of reference.

Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach
Warren
http://rapidshare.de/files/2843515/Organic_Synthesis__The_Disconnection_Approach_by_Stuart_Warren.rar.html
Reader's Review
Warren's Organic Synthesis-Disconnection Approach focuses on retrosynthetic analysis in organic synthesis. Some of the central concepts introduced in this strategy book are synthons, target molecule, FGI (functional group interconversion), disconnection, and reagent.
Synthons: an idealized fragment, usually a cation or an anion, resulting from a disconnection. Synthons may or may not be an intermediate in the corresponding reaction.
Disconnection: the reverse operation to a reaction. The imagined cleavage of a bond to "break" the molecule into possible starting materials.
Functional group interconversion: the process of converting one functional group into another by substitution, addition, elimination, oxidation, or reduction, and the reverse operation used in retrosynthetic analysis.
Reagent: Warren introduces a formal and rigid definition of reagent in this book. Reagent is a compound used in practice for a synthon.
Warren's treatise of organic synthesis emphasizes visualizing and choosing not only the most obvious but the most efficient disconnection (retrosynthesis) in synthesizing a target molecule. The book is set up in a fashion such that synthetic strategies and organic reactions are presented in alternating chapters. Strategies aim to enforce tricks and concepts of organic synthesis like stereoselectivity, control of regiochemistry and stereochemistry, control of carbonyl condensation, order of events in synthesis, rearrangements, use of ringed molecules. Reaction chapters present some of the most significant reactions in organic synthesis, with an emphasis of those involve carbon-carbon formation.
Topics of Warren's Organic Synthesis:
Synthesis Strategies
-The Disconnection Approach
-The Order of Events
-Chemoselectivity
-Reversal of Polarity, Cyclization Reactions
-Protecting Groups
-Choosing a Disconnection (General Strategy)
-Stereoselectivity
-Regioselectivity
-Use of Acetylenes
-Introduction of Carbonyl Condensations
-Control in Carbonyl Condensations
-Use of Aliphatic Nitro Compounds in Synthesis
-Radical Reactions in Synthesis
-Reconnections
-Introduction to Ring Synthesis, Saturated Heterocycles
-Rearrangements in Synthesis
-Use of Ketenes in Synthesis
-Pericyclic Rearrangements in Synthesis
-Special Methods for 5-Membered Rings
Reaction Methods
-One Group C-X Disconnections
-Two Group C-X Disconnections
-Amine Synthesis
-One Group C-C Disconnections: Alcohols
-One Group C-C Disconnections: Carbonyl Compounds
-Alkene Synthesis
-Two Group Disconnections: Diels-Alder Reactions
-Two Group Disconnections: 1,3-Difunctionalized Compounds and alpha,beta-unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds
-Two Group Disconnections: 1,5-Difunctionalized Compounds, Michael Addition, Robinson Annulation
-Two Group Disconnections: 1,2-Difunctionalized Compounds
-Two Group Disconnections: 1,4-Difunctionalized Compounds
-Two Group Disconnections: 1,6-Difunctionalized Compounds
-Three-Membered Rings
-Four-Membered Rings: Photochemistry in Synthesis
-Five-Membered Rings

The book teaches retrosynthetic analysis in organic synthesis. The ability to recognize an obvious and/or obscure disconnection facilitates organic synthesis tremendously. The methods and strategies presented in Warren gives advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and practicing chemists an overview of the most significant retrosynthetic pathways. Exceptional work.

Book Description:
The first new book on psychoactive mushrooms in 10 years. Introducing a rich variety of psychoactive mushrooms from around the globe -including some rare and little-known species - the author describes dozens of species and covers a broad range of mushroom- related topics, from distribution maps to comparisons of cultural attitudes to laboratory analyses of active ingredients.
One of the book's most remarkable features is its multi-disciplinary approach: chemistry, botany, biology, history, anthropology, religion, pharmacology, medicine - all of these are among the fields contributing a diversity of data, questions and information that are assembled into one of the most comprehensive and intriguing portraits of psychoactive mushrooms ever created.
Lavishly illustrated, well-organized and enriched by numerous accounts of mushroom experiences, this book explores the psychoactive mycoflora on five continents and reconstructs a continuity of psychoactive mushroom use throughout history, from as early as 10,000 years ago to the present day. You will also find detailed chapters on mushroom cultivation techniques, psychotherapy applications, the bluing phenomenon, the dangers of accidental poisonings caused by misidentification of species, and more. A treasure trove of information, illustrations and magnificent color photography, the book contains much novel information as well, such as the first report on the psychoactivity of baeocystin and up-to-date findings on the use of plant growth hormones to accelerate growth.

Note: This is not exactly a book, more like a booklet. But it's packed with interesting and unusualy information and goes along well with the previous post on Heroin history.

First of all, it seems like the information about opium cultivation and preparation and other chemistry came from a 1993 Department of Justice publication that was sponsored by DEA.
That booklet is, I understand, out-of-print, and will not be reprinted. It is an amazing document because it essentially tells you all you really need to know about opium poppies, opium, and the basic procedures for extraction and conversion of morphine to heroin.
I can also tell you that the USDA scientist named Mary Acock, was involved in the larger project that produced the book. It's my opinion that, had any of those government dudes thought about it for more than a few minutes, they never would have published it in the first place. It is simply too full of "dangerous" information. - Jim Hogshire

From the Back Cover:
Ah, heroin! The scourge of American civilization! The enslaver and despoiler of all that is good and pure! And heroin's ambassador, the drug addict: a craven, diseased, desperate minion of Morpheus who wallows in a cesspool of decadence and habitual debasement! Yes, fearsomely addictive heroin and the deranged dope fiends who inject it have somehow been merged in the American public's mind to form a two-pronged skewer that diabolically rips away at society's most vital organs, leaving a trail of despair and death in its obscene wake.
At least, that's the way it's portrayed today. But, as author Th. Metzger posits in The Birth of Heroin and the Demonization of the Dope Fiend, it wasn't always so. Like everything else, heroin has a history, and so does the societal archetype of the heroin addict.
Metzger traces heroin back to its inceptual roots as opium, and explains the uses to which the latex of papaver somniferum has been put throughout Western history. He explains the evolution of opium into morphine, and that drug's medical applications and inclusion in many patent medicines at the turn of the century. Metzger also provides an account of the discovery of heroin by British chemist C.R.A. Wright in 1874, and the subsequent shepherding of this astounding substance into worldwide usage, a process initially overseen by Carl Duisberg of Germany's Bayer Company, and later by the I.G. Farben chemical cartel.
At first, heroin was widely used and hailed as a "triumph over pain." But as the American cult of purity began to emerge, heroin was rapidly demonized. Through unprincipled and sensationalized media exhortations, it was tied to alien immigration from Asia, or "the Yellow Peril," which was perceived by isolationists (such as newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst) as a threat to social order, and the stereotype of the diabolical Oriental drug fiend was soon fabricated and installed firmly within the American collective psyche.
In time, heroin came to be associated with defilement, sin and disease, and the hypodermic needle became a potent symbol of moral and physical transgressions. The American temperance crusade and the eugenics movement were other contributing factors in the process of heroin's fall from grace and the dope fiend's ultimate scapegoating as the lowest of the low. Seminal American antidrug czar Harry J. Anslinger furthered this cultural pogrom, adding to it an antipathy towards African and Hispanic Americans, and disingenuously linking those ethnic groups with heroin usage. Metzger also traces the activities of many other influential individuals who contributed to the public's skewed perception of the drug and its devotees over the years.
Today, heroin and its users have become synonymous with devolution and degeneracy. How this came to be makes for a fascinating tale, and Th. Metzger tells it well in The Birth of Heroin and the Demonization of the Dope Fiend.

Robert Brent
http://rapidshare.de/files/1434443/The_Golden_Book_of_Chemistry_Experiments.zip.html]pdf 27MB
Commentary
Ok, this book is a classsic, but contained a little to much information for the US goverment, so it was removed from schools and libaries after an incident "the radioActive boyscout" scared to many parents, around 1962 or so I believe.
Anyway, it is Authored by Robert Brent
Printed 1960. Well pictured with colour illustrations an almost every pages,
and include over 200 simple experiments.
Contains about 114 Pages and has such interesting chapters such as;
What chemistry is
Your home Laboratory
The scientific approach
Water and gases
Chemical Formulas
Acid bases and salts
Nonmetals
Metals
More about Formulas
Organic chemistry
Chemical mathmatics
The future of chemistry
This is a nostalgic gem, wish I had it in my little golden book collection.
It is Downloadable from RapidShare, it is a Superbly scanned PDF of aprox 27Mb.
