| I think hexane or even xylene give better yields, and then use heptane to recrystallize. Also, washing with a 10% ammonia/90% water solution(industrial strength ammonia) should wash out residual hydroxides(same as the polar wash, but only washes the crystals, not the solvent), but keep the PH high enough so no DMT is ionized in the wash. When SWIM did the polar wash with bicarb he lost some, but sodium carbonate, should get the PH higher, and be an even better choice, if one chooses to do the polar wash. Also, with large extractions, defatting is an unecessary step, and it can all be cleaned up with less solvents by recrystallizing... Speaking of larger than kilo extractions, anyways... |

drying with epsom salts is brilliant for removing hydroxides, best combined with a brine wash or so i have been told. i have had numerous first hand reports from folks who've tried drying the naptha before evaporating or precipitating from it and they all said it resulted in the proper translucent hexagonal crystals (NaOH contamination seems to make the crystals form more opaque and cubic)
recrystallising in toluene/methanol i recall seeing mentioned about a dmt extraction in an old writeup from long ago, or maybe that was an ephedrine reX... in any case neither are terribly good for this purpose due to their very high capacity to dissolve dmt freebase. hexane or heptane work much better, hexane is what shulgin uses in all of the dmt synth writeups in tihkal too. |

After adding the lye solution the jar was let set for a couple hours. After 200ml of naptha was added it looked like there was a lighter colored substance between the solvent and plant material. almost looked like bubbles, what went wrong?
EDIT: Ok, after some reading, I think that the solution wasnt basified enough, I think what was encountered was a emulsion layer. |
