hi !!! Just playing with the distilling equippment , distiilling this and that , practising with alcoholic beverages , cheap essencial oils , *RC fuel* etc..

Just one question .

I read that the bulb of the thermometer should be above the liquid surface and below the 3-way junction . WHY ?

Wouldnt It would be better to have the thermometer bulb inmersed in the boiling liquid ? -that way It should mark the temperature of the "just about to boil" liquid ?

--or I am hopelessly wrong ? Sad

Thanks a lot .. and sorry for my chunky English

in short your not trying to measure the temperature of the liquid in the flask... your measureing the temperature of the boiling vapours that are just about the distill over.... so that the temeprature your reading is the temperature of the fraction which your distilling over... ie the BP of the fraction you want to collect.
