Hi,
Was wondering if anyone has done this and has a proper write up on it. Swim kinda needs to know exactly what equipment and chems are needed and how to carry out the rxn. Any help is much appreciated. |

Dude, RU trying to make Stims or Phenethylamines. You'll end up with ------------ with that reaction.
Wrong place to post this no? |

I think this is indeed the wrong place (although ----------- is of course alpha-methyl phenethylamine).
As to the reaction details, here is one way of doing it:
Preparing Methylamine Acetate in IPA
2.63g (40mmol) 85% KOH was dissolved in 50ml Hot IPA. To this was added 2.3ml GAA. 2.72g (40mmol) of MeAm.HCL (40mmol) was dissolved in 60ml Hot IPA. The two hot solutions were mixed in a cold flask and allowed to cool. A voluminous precipitate of KCL formed that was vacuum filtered off.
Preparing Phenyl-2-Nitropropene
55ml of the methylamine acetate in IPA solution made above was put in a 250ml erlenmeyer flask with 10.6g (100mmol) Benzaldehyde and 8.25g (110mmol) Nitroethane. A condenser was attached to the flask and the stirred mixture was heated on a waterbath at 45C for 3 hours.
The flask was removed from the waterbath, stoppered and allowed to cool. A crop of yellow crystals formed. The flask was put in the freezer to ensure maximum crystallization, and then the crystals were vacuum filtered off. The crystals were then recrystallized from IPA. The yield I cannot remember I'm afraid but it is pretty good. |

Since many compounds described in PiHKAL are alpha-methylphenethylamines, this thread wasn't really posted in the wrong forum - considering how many times the compound nitroethane is used in the preparations contained in this book...
(anyway, since you all spoke it out that clearly, we all know nowe that in his specific case, nzbee indeed should have posted here right away... But next time: shhh!! )
cheers
