OK Bees,
i got a question -
which is in ur mind the best hydrolysis tekniq?
I know KrZ's way is nice and high yielding (70%).
TBAOH+NaOH also seems like a valid and easy way, and in my view prefrable to KrZ's, due to ease of the reaction and the workup, but is designated for paspalic acid, though could probably be used for hydrolisis as well.
third route is from the hive archives, with KOH and sodium dithionite, which does seem easy enough and easy workup, but other then the hive page, ive no info on this one (although this seems like the best route).
alright!
in U.S. Patent 3,219,545 the inventors use Barium hydroxid and sodium dithionite for hydrolysis of a crude alkaloidal extract, in reflux, for 3.5 hours, in 50% ethanol solution.
You use ergot alk whatever it may be. DH20 @ KOH the whole time running nitrogen threw threw a bubbler or gas inlet submerged. Also,Doing this before for 30 minutes or so helps release any extra oxygen in the water. All of your alk should go into solution about 45 minutes depending apon whic, and how much of the said alkaloids your using. Then you acidify and filter or do an ether wash or not either way it gets cleaned up later with good technique. Its just dire important to get your said end product to be bone dry.
