One easy source of zinc is the shell of conventional carbon-zinc batteries (make sure not to use alkaline batteries like Duracell or Eveready Energizers, nor rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, but the cheap 1-1/2 volt AA, C, or D plain carbon-zinc batteries). The science teacher can safely cut up such batteries and remove all the black glop, and give the student the cleaned zinc. An alternative is to sand down a modern U.S. penny until the copper surface is removed and the underlying zinc substrate is exposed.

sorry to make a post on another old thread but im kinda new around here so i have catching up to do. zinc is also used to galvanize pipes. there is a galvanizing spray compound available at hardware and auto stores. i dont have a can handy to analyze the components but one may be able to separate it from that. just throwing an idea out there. as always, if im wrong please feel free to flame me mercilessly.
