Extracting Codeine from Cough Syrups

I've searched everyware, but I can only find help on extracting C from pills.

I have 4 bottles of prescription C, and it just says it has C in it, and it doesn't say what else is in it..

Heres what I think..

Hypothetically:

1000 mL of cough syrup into a container
1000 mL of ammonia into container
Shake it like a bitch w/holding money
Filter it
250 mL of chloroform into container
250 mL of water
Shake the fuck out of it(yes no?)
Seperate the layers, discard water. Evap chloroform

Don't know if that is right, can anyone help w/ this?

My idea would be to just make the pH 8.5 - 9.5 with NAOH, Na2CO3 or KOH. Filter out the preicpitate and then shake this with chloroform or ether several times. evap np off and you should have the c.

but wait for better chemists.

chrigu seems to be right about pH adjustment but dont use a harsh base such as NaOH or KOH, use carbonates.
But you should be right after you do the mentioned method, but if you dont know what else is in the bottle you may have other stuff extracting with it...
