Of course S/D has all of those things handy, but still doesnít feel the need to use them on such an elaborate contraption, when a much simpler, device can be constructed that will work just as efficiently. Do not mistake what S/D is saying, he used a similar set up for years and found it to work very well. It did how ever have a couple of drawbacks. The first being that itís almost impossible to store such a set up without stinking up the immediate area. The second being that it is fairly bulky to store. The solution to these problems and more became clear when one day an old timer, explained to S/D how to make a HCL generator w/drier, that takes only minutes to assemble. Requires no glass tubing, and no epoxy or hot glue. And is reliable as hell, and completely foolproof in its simplicity. So S/D presents to you,
The simplest, worlds greatest gasser. You will need,
1 Clean dry Snapple bottle, (or any glass juice bottle)
1 piece of poly vinyl tubing about 7ft long, 3/16 ID
1 rubber stopper, (#6) for Snapple bottle
1 white, bic (stick) ink pen
1 drill/w º inch bit
2 zip ties
1 lighter.
Take your stopper, drill a hole through the center of it. Dis-assemble the white bic stick pen (itís important to use a white one, as the HCL will melt all other types of poly, but wonít touch the white stuff). Moisten the pen and insert it into the stopper until an inch or so is through the bottom. If you have to work at it thatís good. That makes for a nice tight fit, which is desirable. Now, (make sure to anneal your tubing first), go up about 6 inches and then make 4 loops about the diameter of you juice bottle. Apply the zip ties to keep the loops there. Donít pull them so tight that you squeeze the tubing closed..
Now heat the short end of the tube with the lighter, moisten the end of the bic pen on the outside of the stopper and work it on. Yes, itís a bitch but it will go on. One only needs to get it on a half inch or so, and once itís cooled it will not come off. And there it is. Simply add salt, (rock is preferred but table will do in a pinch), pour HCL until itís just above the level of the salt. Take some aluminum foil (heavy duty works best) twist tightly and cut pieces about the size of a pea. Drop in one pellet at a time, plug in stopper and gas, gas ,gas. Make sure that you get the tube out of your N/P when the gas stops so you donít get suck back. And S/D recommends to always weak an organic vapor mask when gassing.
But what about the drier, you,re saying. Remember the loops that we put in the tubing? Keep an eye on them. You will see moisture begin to built in the first then the second and so on. When the last loop begins to get moisture, then your tubing has expired, and needs to be replaced. Come on the stuff is 19 cents a foot.
