Has anybody else seen this...

Ephedrine reacted with Hydrogen iodide or with HCl acid and Zinc or tinfoil can also produce methedrine

Actually the reaction of a benzylic amino alcohol, such as the pseudo(ephedrine), reacts with the Lucas reagent (zncl+Hcl ) to chlorinate the OH in the amino alcohol also the reductive dehalogenation of the said chloroephedrine occurs either under catalytic hydrogenation or a metal reduction , although I 've seen the use of zn,Hg/al, but not sure of the final verdict on the reductive dehalogenation with zncl ........java

benzyl alcohol itself has been reduced under Clemmensen conditions.

plain reflux of Sn/HCl/EtOH is known to reduce certain benzyl alcohols in high yield.

this from the older refs. wonder what's been going on lately.

did anyone ever actually try refluxing Raney nickel with pseudo and EtOH or IPA, btw?

Lately dehalogenation of chloro-ephedrine has been achieved with Pd/C or so I've read... Wink

Just btw you need PPA not ephedrine for amphatamine(s)..
