Facebook now using Facial Detection Systems
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:51:32 PM »
Facebook has implemented a face detection system to "take the effort" out of tagging people. Apparently, the system only detects the faces in the picture and is not a recognition system. Who wants to bet otherwise? I do.

Reading the favorable responses from many users I've read on threads on the subject, I am now confident that when Facebook rolls out a free barcode tattooing service to "take the effort" out of logging in, there'll be queues out the door rivalling iPhone launch sales queues. Sodding idiots.

That is very interesting. Makes sense that they would do that -- how is it that it only detects the faces in the picture and is not a recognition system? That sounds like it is splitting hairs IMO.

a good way to test thier lawful or otherwise use of thier facial recognition system would be to gather all the personal information of someone you dislike then, use one of the photos from the fbi's shitlist,  or use pictures of an international terrorist, in thier profile.

I would think it's much easier to recognize basic shapes like ovals and circles and evaluate their relative position than to perform full out facial identification.  Consumer grade cameras have done it for years, and all you really have to do is find an oval with two close circles in it.  They have facial "recognition," but only to the extent of "that's a face," not "that's Mark Davidson of 34 Sedition Lane's face" which requires substantially more processing.

If they really wanted to use facial identification, they would just be doing it anyway without bothering to announce it.  Under the default privacy settings, you can see the pictures of friends of friends, so if full scale 3rd party information gathering campaigns are already in full force it wouldn't surprise me.

Clearly, but its just a couple steps removed from the Orwellian result we fear. I just can't understand how asleep everyone is. This prick Zuckerberg has been proven to meddle with the information in his Facebook database, playing little "god" games where he predicts who will date who based on profile frequency requests. Just search Google for this awkward-looking prick and you'll see the kind of putz he is.
