Beginner glassware and such
« on: March 22, 2009, 04:25:22 AM »
Trying to find out what general items I should have in my collection. So far I have...
250ml SEP funnel
200mm Fractionating column
500ml round bottom flask
250ml round bottom flask
250ml 60mm flat bottom flask
Distillation head
Vacuum adapter
Thermometer and adapter
All of the above have 24/40 joints

Broke my condenser so I need to replace it. Also know I need Buchner funnel and filtering flask, glass funnel, stand, rings and clamps.

Beakers can come in very useful, for recrystallization and such. maybe some nice glass jars to store chemicals in, for both solids and liquids.  Also, you'll want a decent means of heating, pH strips, measuring liquids, weighing solids, and maybe some glass rodes, depending on what you do those can come in pretty handy - for example i couldn't have made S2Cl2 with out them.

It sounds like you can distill and reflux so you are on your way. :)

Now, where are you when it comes to chemicals? That can be a really big limiting factor when it comes to what you can do in the lab.

For heat will either get a hot plate or oil fryer. Have pint, qt and 1/2 gal glass jars, 1.5L and 1 gal HDPE jugs as well as 250 and 1000ml measuring cups.

For chems at the moment I have NaOH, vm&p naptha, xylene, acetone, 33% muriatic, dilute acetic acid. Access to MEK, methanol, ethanol, IPA, MgSO4, RP.

Would have access to it through the matchbook method. Unless there is something I don't know. Which is highly probable as I have never tried this method. The extent of my chem experience has been through A/B extractions.

Yeah I think match boxes are the only source. Getting it online is risky because a lot of the places are likely sting operations, or sites that will eventually get taken down by the DEA.

I reckon you should get a few erlenmeyers, burettes, retort stands, pipettes, RBF's, conical flasks, a vaccum distiller, stirring hotplate, and MILLIONS of test tubes.

very nice! I always buy glass stir rods, but I always feel like I am simply tossing my money away. I always manage to break them! :(

Yea, that's a $160 shopping list and I am unemployed like most of the country at this time. It will be a minute before I can get any of it. At the moment I am trying to get a small flask. The smallest I have is 250ml and I am looking for a 50ml-125ml.
