Preserving Fresh Mushrooms - Making fresh mushrooms last longer
« on: August 18, 2010, 04:42:23 AM »
One of the major problems with the distribution of mushrooms is that they go bad way to fast. This means many mushrooms besides those Agaricus Disporus (Crimini, Portebello, Button, etc -- all the same) are not able to be grown in one state, shipped a thousand miles, and than distributed to various stores. This is a great thing if you happen to be a small time grower of oyster, shiitake, or other mushrooms - since you can out compete the Big Mushroom companies since your mushrooms are not rotting.

I am considering doing this, (but hell I probably wont, I never do shit lol) I figure I could ship within a 50 mile radius and hopefully be fresher and cheaper than anyone in the area - since there.. isn't anyone in the area AFAIK - and if there is.. they are small timers too

Anyways - I started to think maybe there is a hormone, or substance of some sort that will preserve mushrooms, and help keep them from going bad as fast - as that would also be advantageous.

I know there are various things like that with plants and fruits - IIRC various hormones inhibit ethylene production which makes flowers, fruits, and other items last longer or take longer to ripen/begin too rot.

So, if anyone knows of anything that would perhaps do the same for Fungi - let me know.
I'll look around when I have more time, this post will serve as a great remember - and I'll update everyone on what I find as well.

Pretty good chance that there isn't anything like that though?
Obviously keeping them cool will help tons, but other things must exist as well!
