N-Demethylation of tertiary amines
« on: September 18, 2010, 04:24:47 PM »
Hi all I recently came across this and it looks like a damn fine means of performing an N-demethylation of a tertiary amine using fairly OTC ingredients. No CNBr and No Chloroformates.  ;D

The yields are shit hot, the reaction conditions a breeze and the catalyst easy to come by so can someone please find the problem that I am missing. The catalyst costs around 50 dollars for 100grams maybe less if you shop around. The light source is a hardware store bought 400W bulb.

For the demethylation of tropine a 79% yield of demethylated tropine was returned following the reaction of tropine in the presence of bubbled oxygen and the catalyst rose bengal an easy to come by histological stain. The light source was as stated an off the shelf 300W light. The product crystallized as the pure hydrochloride salt and required no further purification !!!!

This one, less than 3 months old, is a N-demethylation using ferrocene for anyone that might be interested in the opioids  :P
