Handy Dandy Nitrous Oxide generator (just add ammonia)
« on: October 16, 2010, 08:54:55 AM »
So I was reading up on the synthesis of mescaline from the ozonation of elemicin (I'll follow up on this), and it lead me to look at various ozonation reactions.

NH3+O3 ---> NH4NO3 + O2 + H2O

Ozone generators are very easy to make: Simply a transformer connected to aluminium foil contained in a jar within a larger jar... or you can just buy a pre made model.

So, as I'm sure you know:

NH4NO3 + heat ---> H20 + N2O

It is recommended to wash the gas to remove impurities but that could be achieved with pressure and a few vessels.
My hope and idea would be to make a simple to operate nitrous oxide generator that only requires addition of ammonia to run.
I know some people may argue, just go buy the shit, its easy to come across, well I rather compress my own air, and think this is just a fun thing to undertake.

Thoughts/suggestions?

I would like to hear more about mescaline from elemicin.  Keep in mind that it would take a day of running a commercial ozone generator to get a gram of ozone... That would be one day of running an o3 generator for like one balloon of nitrous.  I am really glad to be seeing interest in ozonation reactions though.

yeah I was looking at how low there output was.  I was thinking a home made one with a decent sized transformer would be the best bet, but I'd have to look at what it would cost to run.  It may not be economically feasible but I'm going to follow up on it.

I believe Douchermann had made a pretty effective ozone generator using a neon sign transformer.
Additionally the electrolysis of a certain concentration of sulfuric acid in water will produce O3 at a decent rate and quantity.. as far as electrolysis goes...

It isn't worth the time and effort to produce ammonium nitrate, as nitrates are easier to get, but it has a lot of other uses no doubt.

Go to a neon sign shop and ask for a "franceformer", the black, mean looking, tar filled monsters, they are 15kv @ 30 or 60ma.  With one of those and a properly designed large glass tube, corona discharge unit you could produce huge amounts of ozone.  Unless you are feeding it with pure o2 all day you are going to have a lot of nitrogen compounds mixed with the ozone.  I would like to hear more about Vesps chemical o3 generator and mescaline from elemicin...

p.s. I was off earlier, a 15W germicidal bulb produces about 3g/hour of ozone, so a well designed corona discharge unit could probably do 10-15g/h, conservatively that's around 250g/day.. not bad at all

Here is a tad bit of info relating to producing O3 by electrolysis of sulfuric acid solution.

You can find more stuff on it I am sure, but that will at least get you started and maybe point you in a good direction.
