Why is it that every sort of remotely deviant behavior has to be labeled as some sort of psychological impairment?
If you like to drink, smoke, take pills, what have you, you're an addict. That isn't to say that there aren't people addicted to things, just that not everyone who does something seen as unusual does so because he has some underlying problem.
I don't like intimate relationships. They make me manic depressive and monopolize all of my time. Apparently I feel this way because I have a fear of intimacy, high-functioning borderline personality disorder, and a host of other issues depending on what source you consult and am just in denial. Something obviously must be wrong with me because I don't like the same things other people like. That's not to say I don't have problems. I'm fairly certain an SSRI would do me some good, but I still don't think it would change my views on this matter.
It goes the other way too. People like to diagnose themselves with psychological diseases for some reason. Everyone you meet is bipolar or depressed or autistic. It's as though if you've ever exhibited even one of the symptoms of a disease for any period of time, you get to wear it around like a merit badge that excuses you from the consequences of your actions.
I know several members of this board do suffer from varying degrees of autism and other issues, and I'm sure I have a few I won't admit to myself, but it is not my intention to criticize anyone who actually has a mental health problem. It's really the exact opposite. It has gotten to a point where if you tell someone you have a mental disorder, she is going to assume you're a whiny asshole because that's how the last 10 people who told her they had that disorder acted. Many of us do have problems but won't admit to it or seek treatment because of the stigma these kinds of people have created.
People with real diseases are suffering because of the fake disease trend. It's the same problem created by girls who declare rape every time they get drunk and sleep with someone they regret and the cries of racism that are sure to be heard every time someone white disagrees with anyone who isn't. There are real people suffering from real problems, but it all gets lost in the noise.
