Societal Obsession with Diseases
« on: November 19, 2010, 07:05:44 AM »
Why is it that every sort of remotely deviant behavior has to be labeled as some sort of psychological impairment?

If you like to drink, smoke, take pills, what have you, you're an addict.  That isn't to say that there aren't people addicted to things, just that not everyone who does something seen as unusual does so because he has some underlying problem.

I don't like intimate relationships.  They make me manic depressive and monopolize all of my time.  Apparently I feel this way because I have a fear of intimacy, high-functioning borderline personality disorder, and a host of other issues depending on what source you consult and am just in denial.  Something obviously must be wrong with me because I don't like the same things other people like.  That's not to say I don't have problems.  I'm fairly certain an SSRI would do me some good, but I still don't think it would change my views on this matter.

It goes the other way too.  People like to diagnose themselves with psychological diseases for some reason.  Everyone you meet is bipolar or depressed or autistic.  It's as though if you've ever exhibited even one of the symptoms of a disease for any period of time, you get to wear it around like a merit badge that excuses you from the consequences of your actions.

I know several members of this board do suffer from varying degrees of autism and other issues, and I'm sure I have a few I won't admit to myself, but it is not my intention to criticize anyone who actually has a mental health problem.  It's really the exact opposite.  It has gotten to a point where if you tell someone you have a mental disorder, she is going to assume you're a whiny asshole because that's how the last 10 people who told her they had that disorder acted.  Many of us do have problems but won't admit to it or seek treatment because of the stigma these kinds of people have created.

People with real diseases are suffering because of the fake disease trend.  It's the same problem created by girls who declare rape every time they get drunk and sleep with someone they regret and the cries of racism that are sure to be heard every time someone white disagrees with anyone who isn't.  There are real people suffering from real problems, but it all gets lost in the noise.

I think many people 'snitch' to a) disassociate themselves with the "baddies" and b) trying to gain the 'favors' of another group-usually the most "powerful group' with whom they can justify their 'own designs' whilst being able to say " I was ONLY doing the right thing/following orders

Personally,,"I'd rather die on my feet, than live on my knees"--This is easier "said, than done"....

I too have noticed many more people "admitting/confessing" they are 'bi-polar'....why? does being 'bi-polar' justify certain behaviors/attitudes or something?

IMO people are versatile and 'can change' how they think and feel -- I am SO glad i dont think the "way i did 15 yrs ago",,but it was through experience,, that I have changed---the only thing that provides wisdom,, and therefore (maybe) a different attitude or beehaviour  e.g when I was in a shitty mood I would often "project" this onto those around me,,usually random peeps or the Drs who were meant to be helping me...with me usually coming out the 'loser'....I CHOSE to change this behavior,, and ONLY 'project' positive stuff,, or nothing at all
This was one of the best things I could have done YEARS earlier,, BUT,,  I had no idea 'how to control my feelings' except with mood and mind altering substances

Currently I have a fucked back and am in BIG pain,.. waiting on surgery (3month wait) and many people comment on "how well" I deal with this problem-- Little do they know,, It's taking All my skills!!!)

Like most things in life,, knowledge empowered me with "other ways" of 'looking at my situation ,, and together with practice and more practice has made it almost second nature to 'try and maintain' an "Attitude of gratitude" for ALL the good things/opportunities I have access to--here I sit, fed and housed by our Government,,waiting for  FREE surgery,,and getting paid (not a lot,,$380au per week to do so!!!)

How many peeps get this type of treatment in their countries???  NOT ENOUGH :'(

" without doubt Anyone who can access this forum,,is in the TOP 3% of people IN THE WORLD!!  as far as 'quality of living is concerned!!"

I'm NOT saying some people dont have genuine problems,, but I reckon many people like to think its a "cool" thing ,, kinda "trying to be different,,without 'really' being different--i.e. how can you 'tell' if someone IS, say, bi-poloar? until you have spent a fair wack of time with them?? as I feel is the case with most 'mental health issues--
Not many people with say, 'chronic depression' will " APPEAR depressed, crying or whatever...often the symptoms have arrived bit by bit,, "the slow boiled frog" Syndrome,, and often its "the last straw that breaks the camels back"...that is,, with people like this,,nothing seems too wrong , UNTIL some tiny bit of extra stress,, sends them into a psychotic episode,, and I have seen quite a few "breakdowns" both large and small, and have been a 'passenger' in a couple myself :P

BTW.. I have a few 'close relationships',,  with people who like me for who I REALLY am..and I believe a problem shared, is a problem halved'  --these people are my "therapists" who I can truly be myself with...after all
"Those that 'mind' dont matter,, and those that 'Matter; dont mind"

I hope anyone here who's having a hard time, can at least feel a sense of 'belonging' somewhere....

Cheers to you all,, for having made my "First" online forum membership and participation "a Good thing"

I wish al the Genuine buzzers around these forums,, ALL the BEST....you know who you are...

and DONT forget,,.........." the ONLY failure, is the Failure to TRY!"

may many successful "reactions/reductions/additions/acquisitions and answers.come your way....

Those who suffer from autism....UGGH FUCK FUCK FUCK! so many times do I hear that, like autism is a disease or something.

There is a VERY high chance, that if somebody appears to suffer from autism, that it is the attitudes of society towards the autie/aspie in question, and the lack of willingness of for instance, employers, or wouldbe friends (for those of us who desire friendship, some do not, some, like me have friends, and enjoy their company when I am with them, but would, if they had no friends, not find that an issue)

We often suffer from prejudice, and not autism.

I am classically autistic, as some here likely know, and you know, I do not suffer from autism, never have, never will, although I have suffered greatly in a couple of cases from arseholes who take it on themselves to make life difficult because I am.

The thought of being 'cured' not that it is currently actually possible to do so, disgusts me personally, autism isn't a disease, and is a way of being, complete with its own neurological makeup in those who are autistic, and all the negative stereotypes, well, I have become tired of educating (or trying to) loads of curebies. 'Cure' an autie/aspie and you don't just rid them of autism, but would completely remove who they are as a person, and replace the empty shell left, with somebody else entirely.

I don't consider myself to 'have' autism, but rather, to be autistic. It might not sound like it when you first read that or hear it said in conversation, but there is a difference, and a big one, although it is quite subtle in expression.

I don't suffer from autism, I enjoy every minute of it, although it can be tough sometimes, overloads suck big time.

And you guys know what? I know a great many autistic people in real life, both classical autism, and asperger's, and not ONE of them wants to be 'cured', likewise I am on a social forum online for the autie/aspie community, run by a guy and his girl who are autistic, and I have seen maybe 4-5 people join and say they wish they were NT, and would accept a 'cure', and stick with that point of view when further discussed, and a few more that feel that way, but when they spend a while at the forum, and talk with more of us, learn more of the issues surrounding a 'cure' then change their minds.

These people, who are, and would have it no other way, aren't just those with asperger's, but there are those who have kanner's type autism, or what some people call low functioning autism, and a girl with Rett's syndrome, which comes with seizures, and a whole load of medical problems usually that unlike most types of autism can be serious, or potentially fatal, and she HATES curebie attitudes and practises, and time after time, she has gone to meetings and given Autism Speaks a good healthy dose of intellectual and emotional kick-arse. There is also a lass who I do not know well, but know OF pretty well, who is totally nonverbal and 'LFA', communicates via an electronic voice synth device, and she is proud of the way she is, and does not want 'curing' either.

I do not make excuses on the fact I am who I am, 'oh I can't help it, I am autistic, let me get away with it'. although I do explain sometimes to people that I didn't get the body language, for instance they used, because I'm autie, and cannot always read it, or explain why I wear dark shades almost all of the time (photosensitive), or won't make eye contact ( find it, unless with certain people  who I am very close to, usually someone in an intimate relationship, most unpleasant, physically so, very uncomfortable) I do expect some consideration of things like that, and  not to be discriminated against, but I don't think such things are in the least unfair or unreasonable expectations. And of course, if I either am called a retard, spastic etc. or hear those words used against another of my kind, or used by another in general conversation as an insult towards those who are NOT autie/aspie, or otherwise different, but just as a general insult, then a serious arse-kicking is likely to ensue. Although in the latter case of it being used as a general insult, I don't just assault the culprit,  but try to educate them WHY it is demeaning to those who ARE genuinely those with actual mental retardation, or  who are autistic, etc. It really pisses me off when someone describes stupid/moronic behaviour as 'retarded'

some drug companies and psychiatrists got together and decided they needed to invent and codify diseases and generate a billing bible (DSM-IV) so they can bilk the government out of all the money they can get.
did you hear of the new one coming out?
the DSM-V?
i wonder why assaholism is'nt considered a disease?
and why do they call hemmorhoids hemmorhoids and asteroids asteroids?
should'nt it be the other way around?

Since when did you see a prolapsed rectal vein floating in outer space?

Not counting, of course, the inside of Tony Bliar's...err..blair, sorry, head.

Weren't they dropping PDD-NOS from the new DSM? or was it AS...I know they were dropping one of the two, can't remember which.

As for considering the state of being a class-A tosspot as a disease, I think that it is solely because the term 'disease' generally refers to an altered bodily/psychological function from the majority...innate traits generally aren't considered to be diseases.

And humanity in general, is made up of cunts, or would be, if they did not lack the warmth, depth, and usefulness of a cunt.

There was a,married into the family, member who came to stay with us some months ago,

She was a bitch and I could see that from the moment I ment the little trouble maker.

She would constantly call her x boyfreind just to hand the phone to her new fling and all in all generally cause every sort of drama you could possibly think of until she was kicked out of my house, relative or not, for screaming profanity at the top of her vial lungs 2am in the morn.

Her mother and others that where with her associated this with her Bipolar disorder....

Im bipolar, I have seen EEG and MRIs showing fucked up blood flows and have extensive testing to determine WTF was going on upstairs and I can assure you that this sort of trouble making behavior and drawing attention to ones self like this bitch did is FAR removed from what someone truely experiencing this illness does. Matter of fact its the exact opposite assuming a BP person is not provoked beyond that breaking point which in general seems to be much higher then most peoples. As well even what they call rapid cycle bipolar disorder is around a 2 day up and down cycle of mania and depression so how can one say that acting like an off the wall ass all the time has shit to do with BP. It doesn't, your just a bitch and a trouble maker.

I think she did have a disorder. She was an attention getting whore who wanted to use BP as an excuss to get away with murder but she came around someone with understanding and was sent packing on her obnoxious little way.

I fully understand where your comming from Timecube and I could rant for hours on this but I think im going to try to cut it off here with that little tid bit of personal information.

Sounds more like borderline personality disorder to me.

The devilslag former housemate did the same thing, used bipolar as an excuse to try and get away with murder.

I think she was just a self lothing, fat pig of a woman who wanted attention any way she could get it. Acting like her shit dont stink when you know it does comming out of an ass that large!

Some people are like that and the doctors are pushing these disorders on them to keep them medicated and the insurance train running.

if she were genuinelly bi-polar then she would crash and realize what an assclown she was and crawl into a dark closet.
that usually how a cycle goes the depression ensues then the remorse, and self-loathing, all that shit.
bipolar disease is much more than acting an ass.

In her case she would act out, or get depressed, and sometimes show remorse, but it was all crocodile tears, Doubt that virulent little cow (I say 'little', but thats just a figure of speech, fucker was built like a condom stuffed with walruses.

Probably was bipolar, did fit many of the classic signs, very rapid cycling between one extreme or the other to neutral again. Reported visual hallucinations/autitory distortions. Could have been put on though, but I definately think some of it wasn't entirely invented, bitch was definatey screwed up.

Meh, with any luck she will get raped by a HIV-positive paki, dumped in the road and meatpasted by a truck sometime soon. She is too damn lucky that I have too much to lose if I were caught for bloody murdering the fucker, lucky for her I am I dating the woman I have been looking for all my life, so there is something stopping me from skinning her alive, slowly, with a rusty spoon and drowning her in tabasco sauce.

I've just  Re read this thread,, and as often is the case,, 'with/in Retrospect', you 'see things' from a different perspective...that of thinking about what you already know...
like watching a good movie for the second time, you notice bits you didnt see  the first time...and often, we all tend to miss diferent bits!

So Re reading this thread was Really interesting--( Sure I've reads other threads here more than once, before, but this one had a big affect on me....)

Tsathoggua,, in your first reply,, you 'taught me; more about "How to 'understand' people that 'are' Autistic (as opposed to 'Having" autism--I totally get that and where you are coming from) 'better' than I ever had,,you have "given me,, a Totally New Way to see autistic people,, and its Good!!
.. ..I have some aspie fiends and have met Many "unusual" people over the years,,I cant say I have ever met Anyone who has told me they are autistic,,except for maybe a LFA on the train who is having trouble with manouvering his electric wheelchair....

However, your post was very eloquent; very concise, for such a 'big' topic, and Very Enlightening,, for which I thank you sincerely, for that knowledge,, as it helps me understand a highly 'esoteric' group, that until not so long ago--maybe 30yrs,, were considered little more than 'vegetables..I cant say I know much of the history of that change,,but you have raised my understanding of this subject (autism) HEAPS.....I like your style

In fact you,, swampmon,, are the only person to openly state they 'are autistic'...and ro be honest I dont really "understand what a ' high functioning autie' is....?   What differences are there between them and someone else? Maybe you could help me with this...i.e. whats thee dreaded overload? what happens to you then?

The "definitions" of autism,,if you could call them that!!! cover almost EVERY TYPE of possible 'reason' "why" some people Are,, ASD EXCEPT I think "virgin birth" but I cant find any related research on such, yet :P

BIG Pharma are a CURSE on the face of the earth,,they DO MORE HARM than all the illegal drugs in the US....excepting alcohol,,combined...Hundreds of thousands of people DIE FROM "ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS" who's Responsible? NO one,,Certainly not the Drug Company,,after all,,79% of people benefit from drug 'x',,say like Vioxx...but this is a bit 'off topic'...

 You said it Sedit

[quote I think she was just a self lothing, fat pig of a woman who wanted attention any way she could get it. Acting like her shit dont stink when you know it does comming out of an ass that large!

Its fuckin disgusting and immoral behaviors by the doctors,,

And as for the 'attention getting' thats a definite! and sadly a tactic many women try--funnily its not normally a male type behavior..! thankfully!

but overall a LOT of interesting and valuable info was put into this thread,, and everyone that contributed had 'something' to say, which added to the thread
   Cheers all

speaking of autism and big pharma: there is an ancient herb called Bacopa/Bramhi from the Bacopa monnieri plant which helps with many different neurological conditions.  There has been a lot of success with aspies taking it... It helps you focus, retain information and chills you out, no serious side effects.  I don't know how its been flying under the radar this long but its a miracle drug, try it you will thank me later.

I have read that Bacopa bioaccumulates lead, so that makes me wary of trying it.

For my memory/cognitive problem (not autism related at all) I'm going with 'racetams, aniracetam kicks arse, and am going to try adding an AMPAkine. Think I want to go back on a cholinesterase inhibitor also, huperzine-A was pretty cheap last time I bought any.

As far as 'high functioning' or 'low functioning' goes, I really don't care for the terms, I just don't always know what would better fit. Doesn't have any bearing on intelligence, but rather our ability to function in society performing common tasks of the mundane nature, really, and interact with others. Although Again, there are people who are nonverbal, have motor coordination problems and can't live unassisted, but yet are incredibly smart, google 'amanda baggs', for her story, she fits that latter category, and is smart enough to be quite intimidating. Scratch that...smart enough to scare the piss out of me. She is nonverbal, and people have thought she had mental retardation, but to read her blog, she is just like anybody else out there, only smarter. With some really good insights on some issues we of the autistic community face.

I think its hard to categorise, and calling somebody high, or low functioning just serves to pigeonhole them into a category and label them. Which can be dangerous, people who are not obviously, visibly autistic, or who just appear quirky/strange, or are judged as 'mildly autistic' (ick...what a horrid term) can be brushed off by those who provide services 'sorry, you aren't autistic enough to meet our tick box categories, no help for you'

Or conversely, those who are judged 'severely' or 'low functioning' can get treated like fucking idiots, and not be allowed to develop to their full potential with the support they need.

You wouldn't try and teach a hagfish computer programming. Its that sort of principle. Personally I say bugger the labels, and evaluate what support people need on an individual basis, and not try to artificially classify into functioning categories. Sometimes people live up to expectations, and if those expectations are 'never amount to shit', then what do you expect to happen throughout their formative years, if thats what they know people expect of them?

Overloads? they suck. In my particular case its more physical than psychological, but the former then leads to the latter, but brought on by a suitable stressor, for me personally, it resembles a large scale noradrenaline release. Not pleasant at all. I take tizanidine daily though, and don't have much of a problem there because of it, and if I do...plug the stuff at a low dose, overload killed, high dose, consciousness goes the same way ;D

Basically major physical overstimulation, motor restlessness, generally feeling stressed and shellshocked. I have a benzo script though for nitrazepam, if ever I need it, I don't take it all that often, but if for some reason I have a truly disastrous cunt of a day and get really overloaded, a few of those washed down with a shot of vodka, and its goodbye overload. And of course the painkillers I get for my knee work just as well if I don't want something cognitively disabling. I prefer the alpha2 adrenoreceptor agonists for that purpose over benzos or opiates though, tizanidine or clonidine are very reliable indeed, for me.

There are a ton of stereotypes about auties/aspies, and to sum it up in a nutshell, most of them are full of shite.

How does it manifest in me personally? well I am prone to rocking back and forth/spinning side round from side to side, or flapping, etc, I am not a social creature by inclination, I can do it well enough if I choose, but on the whole, I couldn't give a shit about socialising, I don't have a vast number of friends, that is by choice. I do have friends, but I would much rather keep a few very close friends, than a large number of lesser interpersonal relationships. And I often use a lot of words in casual conversation that most people seem to require a dictionary to look up.

Also, I only date on the spectrum, aspies on occasion, but preferably classically autistic women (a term I like far more than 'low functioning autistic', it sounds so much less perjoritive and altogether insulting), I have dated NTs before, and whilst some of them were nice, they just are not a turn on for me at all, but I have dated aspies, classical auties, and on one occasion a MR chick that I knew a while back.

My current g/f is autistic, and is even less social than I, although doesn't do all the motor stereotypy things that I do, (unfortunately...its pretty damn sexy, but I like her just perfectly for who she is, every last bit of her), only really talks to a 2-3 people on a friendly social basis, outside of her three kids. Lovely girl, about twice my age, and very, very intelligent, unique mind, that truly I have never known the likes of before.

Relationshipwise, these days, I have decided its either on the spectrum, or no relationship at all.

Socially, I have NT friends, but most of them are very.....quirky, to say the least, pretty sure at least one is an undiagnosed aspie, but the people I get on best with are autistic, or aspie.

As far as big pharma goes....Pfizer and co can line up on their hands and knees to beg for the chance to lick my balls and go rot, the greedy pack of duplicitous, unscupulous environment-wrecking sisterfuckers.
