stupid or outdated spell check!?
« on: January 06, 2011, 04:52:51 PM »
I am not quite sure how this works nor which database it uses
but someone should (if this is possible) upload it's word database so
it doesn't consider most common chemical formulas and acronyms we use as mistake.
(HCl,NaOH,MDxx,amination,2c drugs...)

If that's a complex issue don't even bother, but if it is a minor flaw easy to fix than do it! ;D

Just thought it might be good to mention...

Considering how many different chemicals and abbreviations  are present with chemistry, and Internet slang this would be a large task with little to offer.

Are you using firefox with the spell check turned on? I would suggest doing that instead of relying on this forums software for spelling, additionally it is more convenient and suggests words that you probably meant to spell.
It does it similarly to how Microsoft word does it - using the little red lines under the word.

In firefox go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced and click "Check my spelling as I type" -- if that doesn't come up, you may need to click the general tab to see it.

Your firefox might be slightly different, I am on a Ubuntu machine vs windows.. but once you get to preferences...

If the above fails, do this: Dictionaries & Language Packs. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/

Start Firefox, goto this address https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/ and install a dictionary.

Firefox?
It might be under something else - there is a preference or a synonym to that word.. at least.
I don't know. Google it.

In Firefox or any other decent browser (IE excluded), the simplest thing to do is right click and add to dictionary for those common words and abbreviations which keep coming up as errors.

Compiling an exhaustive list of everything would be a massive undertaking and would probably increase the error rate by introducing so many false negatives.

Dictionaries are generally bad for purposes full of jargon. From a implementer's perspective, chemistry is literally the worst, because there are so many combinations where an entered word could have a single common letter typo in so many positions, but not be flagged as the mistyped word is a valid abbreviation or compound.

Consider an exhaustive dictionary complete with every -[letter]L ending. How many different [letter] are valid names, but what portion of those do you routinely type?

In terms of error reduction, training your browser to recognize as correct those strings which you commonly use will be of far more benefit than eliminating squigglies from technically correct by mistakenly typed strings.

Until computers become much more intelligent, overly broad dictionaries are like overly broad spam filters. One can eliminate 100% of spam by redirecting 100% of inbound mail to the junk folder, but that isn't useful in practice.
