Ok, so in my new dream I had acquired new mercury metal.  I also had some lovely smelling MBK sitting handy.  If I were to have used the mercury  dissolved in HNO3 for reductive amination, would the acid get in the way of the rxn?  If so, is there something I can do to make it work?

It would bee best if you used a pure mercuric (II) salt, but solutions have worked for many members  ;) You should titrate it with the acid, dry the salt and then wash the residual acid away  :P The approach first published by Wagner in Dingler's Journal that WizardX posted should work as well 8)
