OTC PTC catalyst maybe for demethylation of eugenol?
« on: January 28, 2011, 08:14:51 PM »
This is a quote from the synthetikal archive:
Quote
As for eugenol --> safrole best method for demethylation is so far AlI3/PTC but the PTC is the problem, aswell as the requirement for an inert atmosphere, argon is easy enough to get but the glassware to do it, as you said you want a minimum requirement...
If you can find an appropriate PTC, PEG-400 i was told isnt to hard to get and may work in place of TBAI which is a bit hard to make but certainly do'able... Bu4NI = Tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI)
3Butanal + NH3 --> Bu3N (+ BuI -->acetonitrile--> Bu4NI)

-AC

Now he mentions peg-400 and another person mentioned it being under the name carbowax, well I also found out it goes by another name in a certain over the counter laxative. The bad news though :/ the glassware requirements and intert atmosphere.
Furthermore, he gave no refs on the PEG-400.

Polyethylene glycol as a phase-transfer catalyst? I think it may work in a similar fashion to the crown ethers, but I'd be hard pressed to see it as likely useful for any of the various acidic eugenol demethylations.

Polyethylene glycol is also, as I recall, used as the pill binder in the new Oxycontin formulation everyone's got their knickers in a knot over.

With regard to eugenol I suggest you continue your research. There are many methods available and in my opinion after seeing one guy work for months at the aluminum-salt catalyzed reactions, I'm pretty sure aluminium salts are not the way to go unless you're using pyridine as a cofactor. Strong Lewis acids seem to give tars in these reactions, and I wouldn't be surprised to find it's because they catalyse polymerization.

Dude, References, Without them these rehashing of years old dead threads is pretty much worthless unless the discussion has been beat to death elseware.
There once were some bees and you took all there stuff!
You pissed off the wasp now enough is enough!!!

Why does everyone seem to think inert atmosphere is so hard?  Granted life would be easier with schlenk line, but you could easily achieve the same result by using an aspirator, argon, and tygon tubing with a 25 gauge needle attached.
