electrolysis questions
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:35:05 PM »
I know hardly anything about electrolysis.

Besides reading a bit about it here and there I'm a complete noob you could say.

I understand how it works on a basic level but now I actually want to get into it.

It seems like an AWESOME way to obtain pure elemental metals and halogens, among other crazy things.

For a decent setup what would I need exactly? I understand I need electrodes. How important is it that I use the right ones? What ones should I get? Any reading material that I should look at aside from beginner stuff(I can only grasp up to an intermediate level)?

I also need a power supply of some sort? Should I just use a battery or buy something else? I'm confused and looking for help from those experienced.

I want to get into this REAL bad. My mind has been racing with ideas for new methods to synth all sorts of things.  :D

Mucho Thanks.

Well it really depends on what you plan on doing. It sounds like you want it for producing elements, instead of doing oxidation or reduction on organic compounds, right? Just a side note, electrolysis is a great way to get metal hydroxides. before I sourced them all this is how I made copper and iron hydroxides, which were later dissolved in an acid or heated to form their oxides, which I used in thermites.

I can't find a great source of information right now on electrolysis, calculating voltage and all that jazz, but I will certainly keep my eyes open.

This might be of interest for you, its about all I could find at the moment.  http://www.freepyroinfo.com/Pyrotechnic/Pyrotechnic_Chemicals/Perchlorate_1.pdf

Can't promise, but give me a little bit and I think I'll have a ton of info on it. :D

I know this is an old old thread, but just looking around the site abit, and the question triggered of a book called Kings Chem survival guide. It has some really basic electrolysis procedures such as obtaining pure metals, numerous gases, and a range of metal salts. Thought Id include in case someone else wanted an easy starter pack for electrolysis.

IIRC theres a member here or at SM,, who alludes to workin  in a electroplating shop,, and the 'benefits it held for him
