Your thoughts on (substituted) amonium salts? Share them in here!

A lot of people place too much concern on what mercury salts to use in a reductive amination. I think more thought should be given to what ammonium salts are used instead.

So what do you think?:

Ammonium Acetate vs Ammonium Chloride (and why?)

Methylamine HCl or Acetate or Sulfate or Nitrate. (and why?)

Tartarate, salicylate, (penta)borate, silicate ....

Theres a million of 'em!

Easier workup, smoother reaction, higher yields, lowered toxicity, reduced byproducts ...

or even plain old superstition.

Which salts do you prefer and why?

I was really wanting to talk about superacid salts of tertiary ammonia compounds, like tetraalkylammonium triflate.  They are sexy ionic liquids! When a superacid and a PTC fall in love, eh?  But I see I off topic a bit here, so I am heading back to lurkville.
