peracetic acid preparation
« on: April 12, 2011, 03:45:35 AM »
L here

I was wondering about something. Perhaps someone here has an opinion.

Using the hive as a reference Chromic rarely fails to emphasize how long he has aged his  peracetic acid for.
IIRC he suggest around 5 days. During recent digging I came across a chinese reference from mainstream chem
publication. If I'm reading it properly it says peracetic acid from acetic acid, H2O2 and H2SO4 in 24 hours.

"Preparation of Peracetic Acid from Acetic Acid and Hydrogen Peroxide: Experimentation and Modeling"

Any thoughts on this?

Iv noticed the bite that happens when you smell Peracetic acid gets stronger over a 2 or 3 day period until it levels off so I would go with atlest 2 days before moving on. I have not performed a quantative test however and if someone can think of a quantative test for Peracids that would be great. Im thinking NaI to iodine may yeild the desired information.

Hi Sedit. Having posted this I suppose the thing to do is to just leave the peracid a few days to be on the safe side.
I'm still curious though. I've always felt confident following Chromic's suggestions. The hunting that I've done
shows that peracetic acid is being used increasingly by the brewing and food industry as a cleaner. Test kits are
available ... that would be a nice luxury.

I've only made this a couple of times, but I did note a change in smell, or sensation, on the nose. "Like a fine wine .." NOT.

LL08: 48 hours has worked fine for me in the past (>70% yield)

ok, thanks, that's interesting. Quite a bit shy of 5 days.

I had a look at the titration information, but I'll need to study up on that. I have a bit of iodine.

As suspected using iodine will show the amount of oxidant in the solution by giving an amount to weight after telling the concentration of peracid in solution.

Like fine wine you really mean like a fart that went sour a month ago now someone set it on fire and its burning your nose... right?

i remember reading somewhere online that recommended 48 hours for it to reach equilibrium.  i can't seem to find that reference now though.  as long as you keep it stoppered airtight and kept in the dark then 5 days would also be fine but i think 2 days is sufficient.
