Its true that workers at mail places dont always follow the rules, but are you gona bet 10 years of your life on it?  they may be able to take alternate forms of ID but its still true that they A) Require enough ID to confirm you live in state and B) send a copy of those forms to the government.

Is getting a mailbox through an assumed name enough to bring the feds in? No, they arent gona go through their databases and cross check every single person for no reason and then send agents out.

BUT if a package gets unwanted attention you can bet they will check to see who owns the box, when it comes up BS then they are going to be MUCH MORE interested.  Depending on whats in it you can bet that they will be out for blood and no amount of excuses will save you a trip to the police station at least.

If you don't have a government issued photo ID which you are willing to cough up on demand then you will be treated like a leper. That applies whether you are renting a mailbox, opening a bank account, or just walking down the street minding your own business. The powers that be have convinced all the sheep of the need for identification at every turn. They produce it on demand without thinking about how it controls them.

If you don't fit the pattern then you stand out. Trying to play fast and loose with the rules will draw unwanted attention because 99% of people will walk in with a standard ID, probably 90-95% of which will be driver's licenses.
