positioning?
« on: May 08, 2011, 02:06:01 AM »
Can anyone recommend any reading material about numeric positions for a non chemist?

Looking to understand activity levels, and why.

For example mdma runs a  3,4.. what does  that mean and why? I have tried google but i think there's a name for it rather than 'numeric positioning'?

Perhaps your question will be answered by Nature 221 537-541 (1969) which was scanned for the former chief bee 8)

i think the notation system have even changed, but there are really good u tube vids on the notation

but id say, if you count around the ring from the point the methamphetamine is attached, so count counter clockwise 1 2 3 4 at positions 3 and 4 you will find the methylene dioxy group, which is di oxy becasue there are 2 oxygens. both attatched to a methyl group

so 3 4 methylene dioxy - methamphetamine. now you know where the methamphetamine is because you can just count backwards from the 3 and 4 positions

As far as understanding IUPAC nomenclature, this web page is rather comprehensive:

h**p://www.acdlabs.com/iupac/nomenclature/

and there's an even more comprehensive e-book available:

Thanks Lugh, Nomenclature was the word I was after - looks like quite a bit of reading in order but thanks for putting me onto the right lingo.
