Modified soxhlet
« on: May 22, 2011, 08:34:15 PM »
I've read in a couple of syntheses about the use of a "modified" Soxhlet.

How does this differ from the conventional Soxhlet extractor and in what way is it modified ?

Could you post an example of what it is you are talking about, such as where you have read about it?
Could help out a lot.

Such as if it were for biological (http://www.deepdyve.com/lp/taylor-francis/a-modified-soxhlet-extractor-for-histologics-and-histochemical-use-KTTQnZE8KO) use or something more chemical?

Perhaps hot water is ran around the solvating section to increase extraction efficiency/rate, etc. Or cool to prevent decomposition; as mentioned in above link.

There are many ways in which a soxhlet can be modified, so you're going to have to be much more specific if you expect us to be able to help you  ;)  Could you provide an example, we're not omniscient  8)

I found this referred to in a number of Sasha Shulgin's synths in Pihkal.

Sasha used that technique because of substrate solubility issues and the pyrophoricity of LAH  8)

"There are many ways in which a soxhlet can be modified"

Er..which "way/technique/method" IS that, oh wise one,???

"I found this referred to in a number of Sasha Shulgin's synths in Pihkal."

OK Hugh, Surely this is a "pretty straightforward explanation",,put in a subtle way,,Yet I'm sure,, someone of your talents, can "read between these lines"

How many "types/methods/techniques DID he use? Does he ever say? I've not read that book?

In "which way,, "did he modify" said soxhlet? ............hugh? If you could be so kind as to "elaborate" for some us "less experienced Members"

 Cheers Hypnos

The nitrostyrene needs to be in solution to bee reduced so a soxhlet thimble or filter paper is used to retain the solid substrate  8)

A very good friend of mine and professor has made a publication on a modified soxhlet apparatus, where boiling solvent is used to extract stuff.
This has several advantages.. find his publication here:
