Browsing the interwebz yesterday and I found this pic of MethylMan
« on: June 24, 2011, 11:14:24 AM »
Not sure which one is him  ???

Is that not fucking amazing? Last time I saw pics from an electron microscope they were just grain dots and they tried to tell me those were atoms. It took a huge leap of faith to believe it, but now! Look at that detail! What I don't get is why the carbons arent bonded to each other for their 4th bond. They just seem to be laying around haphazardly.

MethylMan, why y'all just laying around like that?

so long as there is a hydrogen on the far side then there is a methyl to that madness!

I didnt think about that. If they are all 120 apart that would put one in the back.

I agree, thats an amazing EM image, yet the concept of 'outer shells' ACTUALLY BEING just like a shell to look like! though its hard to actually see that fourth bond to the hydrogen- it DOES look like they arent in any formation, as we like to imagine
In fact ,,with images like these being made, I wonder whats going to happen when we "see with our own eyes"!!
molecules of compounds, that what we "Believe" Are, bound in a 'certain way' only to find out, this just aint true!
where ARE those "fourth bonds?" Actuallly the closer i look these look like carbon chains, and the three legged fellow, is the 'terminal bugger'
I wonder what the length of exposure was?

You wouldn't see the electrons and even if you could they would be well away from the field of view. If that pic were to scale the closest electron would be down the street away from you. Actually these images, the more they take, confirm our ideas of structure. Look up images of benzene, just like you'd expect, a hexagon. You can even see the hydrogens clinging to the corners.

yeah I find it fascinating myself ,wow we dont 'understand light.or gravity' yet we depend upon them...the Universe is a Pretty BIG Place, and earths a 'speck in spacetime'

Do you ever wonder if our solar system is like one oxygen type molecule of the Universe?

Maybe hmans are some type of 'Virus, or Parasite' living off, and slowly killing our host? ( only "dumb" Viruses Kill their 'Host' )

I LOVE seeing advances in technology and its evolution--I am a fan of a guy named R.Buckminster-Fuller; he designed and patented geodesic structures, Some Carbon isotopes are called "Fullerenes" due to their structure.which he was building in reality what they later found in nature, with SEMs I think.

I studied photography once upon a time, but its the advances in the Receptors and computer interpretation of that,,for that is how the image is produced--
so advances in these types of technology may someday allow us to "see" Much more than we do now. I wont be surprised!

Allotrope, not isotope, hyppy. Allotropy has to do with the arrangement of atom groups in an element (such as white, red, scarlet, violet, vitreous allotropes of phosphorus or white and grey metallic arsenic), isotopy is where the number of neutrons within an atopic nucleus differs from the norm (e.g fissile, highly radioactive 235U, vs rather poorly radioactive 238U 'depleted uranium' consists very largely of this isotope)

I'm hyperbolic, hypergolic, viral, chiral. So motherfucking twisted my laevo is on the right side.

No, that's just carbon with hydrogen's attached. I'm sure the image is enhanced to some degree, but it is pretty damned awesome.
